Sounds like field-reversal. Make sure the movie was exported inerlaced, lower (even) field first. Also make sure you’re importing it with the correct (even field first) Avid settings. Check for that in the Options tab of Import.

However, with miniDV cameras so cheap, it’s actually feasible to pick up a dirt cheap camera to use in the edit room. With the move to data-based (rather than tape) workflows, you really need to justify dropping 4 digits on a DV deck.

If you’re really in doubt, you should try a short non-critical test. I don’t have a deck that does DV50 through firewire. But I shoot on P2 cards. As long as your frame rates are consistent you can mix the two on the timeline. I have projects that mix DV25, DV50, and Beta-SP.
As far as being able to “work” this way, that really depends on your system. You didn’t indicate what hardware you’re using. As far as I know, you’ll need some form of Avid’s DNA (Mojo or Adrenaline) to see the DV50 on an external monitor. But the software is perfectly happy mixing resolutions as long as youur clips use the same frame rate.

The cool, translucent lower third mouseovers that Youtube uses might work. You could fade one up for a bit after the host/guest fonts. You could also tagout your intro with “Brought to you this week by Blahbadee Industies…”

The deck merely reads existing TC so changing the setting there won’t help.
Next time you insert the offending tape, simply rename it. The Avid basically looks for whatever the existing TC format was. You may have to clear the error message first, but renaming should take care of you.

Grinner’s right. However. please compare Avid’s minimum and recommended computer specs against the box you’re buying. The Athlon proc and Matrox video card give me cause for concern. If you’ll rely on this system for anything other than hobby/amusement, I’d investigate further. Besides…. this likely won’t be a system you can grow into current Avid products with.

If you have Sorenson Squeeze on the same box you edit with, you should just take your final edit and mixdown your video tracks to 1 stream and your audio tracks to a stereo file. Then you can export a Quicktime reference movie (no need to output an uncompressed movie) to encode in Squeeze.
Aside from movie studios having better compression tools, movies are generally shot at 24 fps. That’s about a 20% space advantage over the frame rate you’re shooting in. That’s a direct translation to being able to fit more footage on a DVD.
