the problem with attempting to shortcut your process is that the movie from AE has no timecode to match the original.

All of the long-form chromakey I’ve ever done was simply handled by setting up the AE render for the entire clip but turning off the keyed layer during the parts that did not require keying. This reduced the renderin AE tremendously.

But, not, I cannot think of any way to replace all of your clips at once unless you can match the timecode precisely. Then you would take the entire original clip offline and reconnect to the full-length rendered alpha footage from AE.

You many never be able to do it to your satisfaction in FCP. Apple’s transitions are only useful between clips on the same track. and they do NOT pass the alpha channel so the graphic becomes an opoque layer, if you’re not careful.

You want a filter that can be applied to the graphic. You can take it to Motion and reimport it as a movie or a clip.

If they can’t step you through this on the phone, you’re dealing with the wrong company.

Overlaying a movie will not give you closed captions, it will produce open captions or subtitles. CC is switchable and is encoded into Line 21. You will be way ahead to give the captioning service your video and paying them to marry the two together.

Captioning is unbelievably complicated. You can search the forum for hundreds of captioning threads.

The easiest way to get DVD material into FCP is to play it out of a DVD player, through a DV camera or deck, and into the Macintosh via Firewire. Transcoding takes for-freakin’-ever and doesn’t always work. Handbrake and other shareware rippers all have support forums at their publishers’ sites.

PNGs should come it just fine so the source of the PNG is probably the issue. Did they originate on a PC version of Photoshop or some weird PC application? Can you open them into iPhoto or Preview? If so, you might be able to export them as jpg or tif or another png.

If you’re a newbie with Macs and FCP, your best bet is to stick with known formats like DV and jpg for your first several hundreds of hours of work. And welcome to the family.

Usually I just get flipped off.

FCP’s rendering pipeline can get sticky when you are trying to do multiple operations at once such as scaling and moving and processing an alpha.

Using the Render Engine is not easy, full of little trips and traps. Print and study this manual very carefully.

You’d need to do some tests before concluding it’s the file itself. Could be your sequence settings or the physical location of the file or even a slight change in the output from AE.

You mean you want to open a project with just one sequence open?

Open the project, close all of the sequences except the one you want and save all. Better yet, Save As and give the whole thing a new incremental name. Go to prefs for FCP and make sure you are set to open a new, empty project on launch, not the last one that was open.

Quit FCP. Relaunch it and post back.

< The effect you want to do is difficult under the best of conditions, most likely impossible under yours and, as Thax has already said, far too tedious to try to explain here. Buy any or all of the advanced FCP books and start reading and doing the effects-based tutorials.
