Importing Issue…
I am a recent convert and am loving my Mac and FCP, only I’ve run into two different issues with FCP. I’m trying to import two different types of files. First off I’m working on a vacation move, I’m wanting to import a section of this DVD, my buddy who got me to switch told me to use MacTheRipper and then Handbrake. I did this and FCP will not let me import the the .MOV file. I get this error, file error:1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. The other issue I have is in regards to PNG files. When I try to import them in they’re grayed out and not available to pull in. Although if I select show all files it allows me to select the PNG, when I do I get the same error as above. Any ideas would be great!!! I can’t really think of what the issue is, I can only assume I’m encoding the DVD file incorrectly but the PNG I have no idea what to do. I really need to fix these because I’ve got a couple projects lined up that require the use of both of these file types.

The easiest way to get DVD material into FCP is to play it out of a DVD player, through a DV camera or deck, and into the Macintosh via Firewire. Transcoding takes for-freakin’-ever and doesn’t always work. Handbrake and other shareware rippers all have support forums at their publishers’ sites.
PNGs should come it just fine so the source of the PNG is probably the issue. Did they originate on a PC version of Photoshop or some weird PC application? Can you open them into iPhoto or Preview? If so, you might be able to export them as jpg or tif or another png.
If you’re a newbie with Macs and FCP, your best bet is to stick with known formats like DV and jpg for your first several hundreds of hours of work. And welcome to the family.
