Activity Forums Apple Final Cut Pro Legacy Help with creating a “projector” style effect

Its much easier to re-shoot the scene while actually projecting the images on the actor.
You’d use a standard video projector playing the scenes you desired, aim that at the actor, and shoot with a camera.

To do this fully in post it is extremely time-consuming.
You must first “rotoscope” the actor (cut his shape out, frame-by-frame) and then key the other image over that cut-out.

The image you add this way will not be very convincing as it will not follow the contours of the actor’s shape as a REAL projection would do.

    Thanks Thax,

Unfortunately everything’s already been shot. It doesn’t have to look exaclty like a projector – I’m just using it as an effect here and there.

How would I go about this (step by step) in FCP?

    Thanks

Sorry, but this kind of procedure is too complex to adequately describe in a forum.

There is various 3rd Party software that can help “motion track” once you manually outline the actor in question.

Hope you’ve got a lot of time to invest,

< The effect you want to do is difficult under the best of conditions, most likely impossible under yours and, as Thax has already said, far too tedious to try to explain here. Buy any or all of the advanced FCP books and start reading and doing the effects-based tutorials. Once you've familiarized yourself with the dozens of different ways you might be able to approach such an effect (compositing, blends, displacement mapping, rotoscoping, to name only three or four) you can try to determine which might work with your footage. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
