    Hello,

I’m working on a project that involves greenscreen footage. Since I’m doing the actual key in After Effects, I usually render out an identical “keyed out” version of the file out of AE, bring it into FCP and use the replace clip function to swap out the original clip in the timeline.

My question is this – in the cases where I have a lot of cuts and transitions, using replace clip 50 times over is a waste of time…. is there a way to use replace clip to replace all instances of that file in my timeline all at once? I’m hoping for a quick keyboard shortcut answer here [**fingers crossed**]…

Also, sometimes when I work with a big greenscreen file, the workflow stated above is not effecient since I often use about a quarter of the original file and rendering out an identical “keyed out” version is a waste of time and drive space. What type of workflow do you recommend here – making a cut with the original greenscreen footage mixed with other footage and then bring that whole clip into AE, apply the key over the entire clip, composite and export? Or should I isolate just the greenscreen footage I’m using, key it in AE and bring it back to fcp? I’d love to just do the keying in FCP, but unfortunately my client thinks that the FCP keyer is sub-par compared to keylight in After Effects:(

Thanks for any tips. Happy Holidays…

the problem with attempting to shortcut your process is that the movie from AE has no timecode to match the original.

All of the long-form chromakey I’ve ever done was simply handled by setting up the AE render for the entire clip but turning off the keyed layer during the parts that did not require keying. This reduced the renderin AE tremendously.

But, not, I cannot think of any way to replace all of your clips at once unless you can match the timecode precisely. Then you would take the entire original clip offline and reconnect to the full-length rendered alpha footage from AE.

    Hope you get better advice.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
