[Lori] “They also need me to make a DVD with the best quality possible. I am used to exporting Same As Source in Avid but am not sure what the best option is if I am just going to use it in iDVD or DVD Studio Pro.”

Export your sequence using self-contained movie (it’s all in the manual). Hit the options buttons and make sure you’ve got the same format/coec selected that you are working in. on your timeline. This will create a continuous movies that contains clones of your sequence’s files.

IMport this self-contained movie into DVDSP.

You CAN use Compressor (or any other encoder) to create MPEG2 for you but you might as well just let DVDSP do it for you. The defaults are excellent, generally. If you need more control, you will need to pop the Help system open to the secitons of tweaking the encoder by using compression markers and some other tools. Not fun.

“Hollywood”-type major features use dozens of applications. Any particular version, model or release of any NLE may only be in use in any aspect of the project for the developers of said NLE to be able to claim, in all truth, “this new major feature was edited on Brand X NLE.”

Funny, you rarely see Ulead, Media 100, Premiere, Grass Valley, Sony and forty or fifty other NLE makers making such claims.

July 30, 2007 at 3:09 pm in reply to: lower third theology

[Mark Joseph] “My point is he always hides behind
“that is what is done on
    television”
can anyone point me toward any literature, o”

There were some generally accepted standards a long time ago but they’ve all been thrown away. I still try to keep my lower thirds up for 7 seconds so the audience has time to read “Claude van deBoughenflamman, Vice President of Aerial Text Display Operations and Software Boobie, Santa Monica Typography Deployment Division, Laureate Industrial Development and Skywriting Corporation, LLC.”

I love Apple’s LiveType animation presets to get text on and off the screen but the assembly and dissolution times must be added to the 7 seconds. But it’s really hard these days to find a shot that lasts 7 seconds.

We also use plenty of animated backgrounds. The days of the static “pill” are long gone and I say good riddance.

“Distraction” is often confused with “refocussing.” If your lower thirds contain valid or crucial information, anything you can do to pull attention to them is fair.

Your best bet is to ask this client of yours to record or capture examples that he wishes you to use as models. He may be watching some lame reality show and you may be watching some lame local news.

July 30, 2007 at 2:58 pm in reply to: How do I create a peep-hole effect?

    > use mask to create small black hole .. and grid and camera to zoom threw the hole .. make grid long enuff that u can keep zooming .< Umm, I wouldn't do it that way at all but that's what's interesting about After Effects and we users. "Peep hole" implies a fisheye distortion to the image as seen from the looker's POV. The view of the person looking through the peephole is different, though, from what a camera would see if it traveled through the peephole. At some point, you must lose the fisheye distortion. If you were to create the effect in 3D space, your door is one layer and there is a hole in it that has been created by a mask. Your camera, representing the looker, can track through space to approach the door and look through the security lens. Just on the other side of the hole is a movie layer, precomposed to have a fisheye distortion applied to it. It has to be close enough to the door so the POV camera doesn't see the edges. As the POV camera moves through the hole, you can enlarge the hole by animating the mask while at the same time diminishing the fisheye distortion to flatten out the movie. As LifeType noted, several tutorials are available to assist you with some of these concepts. Be sure to visit and search the beginner's AE forum. Also, if you get around to completing the project, please drop by and tell us how you made it work. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

  • Capturing separate media is a capture setting, easily modified.

“Output” is not a valid term for FCP. You can export and you can print to tape.

There may be some weird video formats that come into your machine as separate media files without intervention or control but you haven’t bothered to include that information.

July 27, 2007 at 2:32 pm in reply to: falling leaf/paper effect

Back in the olden days, long before Expressions, I used Sphere and Cylinder to do snowfalkes, leaves and feathers. A leaf wrapped around a Cylinder layer can be animated, with some care, to have truly convincing aerial ballistics. Doing it in 3D is more of a challenge.

Nowadays you could use Shatter and Foam, too, but those require precomping movies to become the particles. A bit of a challenge for noobies.

July 27, 2007 at 2:28 pm in reply to: planning a time lapse shoot

    > I’m not doing this commercial at all the way it should be done.

I just don’t have the time or money.

I’m kinda of oscillating between shooting the actors or just using stills and doing some kind of stop action effect.

Either way, this is going to be alot of work.< These are contradictory and mutually exclusive statements. I'd be very careful. If you don't do it correctly, you will spend much more time trying to fix it than if you had shot it properly. If it's a lot of work, it's very expensive for someone. If you're not getting paid, you're just teaching yourself a new trick. The Clorox spot struck me all the wrong way. Interesting execution but it had no style, just content. July 26, 2007 at 4:32 pm in reply to: Scrolling News Text

I’d handle this effect in post with a dedicated, downstream character generator.

As Roland suggests, a script of some kind might be able to suck-and-shoot from a Word document (I’ve never tried scripting at all) but it’s not terribly difficult to string together of bunch of text crawl effects into precomps.

July 26, 2007 at 4:28 pm in reply to: from FLAT to Round?

Has Boris disappeared so completely from our collective group-think?

The Boris 3d filter packages include Sphere and Cylinder that have keyframable WRAP parameters. Very cool and fun to sue. Takes a bit of practice.

You might check the Boris forum here on the cow to see what they’re selling these days.

July 26, 2007 at 3:22 pm in reply to: Viewing Audio Waveforms FCP6

I’ve searched the apple.com forum for waveform issues like yours and came up blank. this suggests, inconclusively, that it’s a localized hardware or software installation issue at your end.

Wish I had more to tell you, sorry. Hope you get better advice soon.
