How do I create a peep-hole effect?
Posted by David Del on July 29, 2007 at 9:05 pmI was wondering if there is a way to create a fake door with a peep-hole in it and have the camera swoop through the peephole to a video on the other side?

"Peep hole" implies a fisheye distortion to the image as seen from the looker's POV. The view of the person looking through the peephole is different, though, from what a camera would see if it traveled through the peephole. At some point, you must lose the fisheye distortion. If you were to create the effect in 3D space, your door is one layer and there is a hole in it that has been created by a mask. Your camera, representing the looker, can track through space to approach the door and look through the security lens. Just on the other side of the hole is a movie layer, precomposed to have a fisheye distortion applied to it. It has to be close enough to the door so the POV camera doesn't see the edges. As the POV camera moves through the hole, you can enlarge the hole by animating the mask while at the same time diminishing the fisheye distortion to flatten out the movie. As LifeType noted, several tutorials are available to assist you with some of these concepts. Be sure to visit and search the beginner's AE forum. Also, if you get around to completing the project, please drop by and tell us how you made it work. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
