September 27, 2007 at 1:34 pm in reply to: Qmaster and Compressor Network Rendering QestionSorry to butt in without anythign constructive to add:
There is a Qmaster forum at apple.com.
The traffic is low and the consensus seems to be that Apple’s implementation of mutli-machine rendering remains, after 4 years, an unnecessarily cruel joke.bogiesan

It’s not as easy and it’s made more complicated by how you shot it. If you haven’t shot it yet, you’re in luck.
Open the online help system and use the index to find the sections on Masking and Rotoscoping. The topics are thoroughly covered in about 100 pages.bogiesan

This is highly advanced AE work. I suggest you either hire it done, find someone on your production team who already knows how to use AE, find a 3D animation artist, or reshoot the scenes.
Creating the shadow template is easy and can be done in Photoshop or as a precomp in AE using the venetian blind wipe effects as a still frame. You can use this layer as a gobo and shine a 3D light through it or you can distort it and apply it to your bed using blend modes. The difficulty is in trying to simulate the 3D space. It gets even more difficult trying to mimmic movement within the movie. for this you also need to understand displacement mapping. And that’s just the mechanical part. Making it look good, selling it to your audience, is going to be nearly impossible.
(The following is sarcasm, try not take it personally) Once you figure out how to create the blind effect, check back in with us and we will attempt to guide you through placing 3D distortions into a 2D comp. Meantime, open the online AE manual to the sections on 3D and try to imagine how we will synopsize 500 pages of super complex information into a few paragraphs of forum posts.
Reshooting with practical lighting effects will be cheaper and easier.

Actually, I can’t see this at all. Remove the junk and show us the waves maybe.
[nextgear] “As you can see in the boards there would be many unique masks that would have to be created and animated.
“> Sure, I could make a bunch and duplicate, but I would like each to be somewhat unique. Also, trying to hand animate a number of points in a mask over time and achieve an organic and naturally fluid motion is more difficult than it may initially sound. < I just don't see the issue. Your shape is two Bezier points and the mask shape can be animated with two keyframes. An Expression could easily refer to a single shape and apply several variations of speed of reveal, reshaping, gradient fills, scaling, and other movement. With CS3 you have that Brainstorm thing, it's cool. But try to have some patience. The Big Dog Wonks will be by in a few hours or tomorrow with plenty of other suggestions. bogiesan

> I have tried many things from masks (as I mentioned), 3D stroke, etc. but haven’t achieved the proper look. < Those are what we'd probably suggest. You'd have to tell us exactly why none of those work for you. It's quite impossible to tell from the still image what it is you think you're trying to get the things to do or look like. Revealing objects with animated masks is quick and easy and even fun in AE so hard to tell what you found "tedious." bogiesan

September 25, 2007 at 9:52 pm in reply to: capture with timecode on screen and no scene detaction> 1-i have to capture a cassette in one big file. unchaking “create new clip in star/stop” does not seems to work… any ideas? < That is how HDV works, can't be changed that I know of. > 2-i have to “print” the timecode on screen, i would like to doit direct on capture (whit no render, the case with timecode generator or plug ins, theere are MANY cassettes) < You can only do this if you bring the HDV in through an external box and not through Firewire. If you bring the signal in through a box, you may be able to eliminate the stop/start detection. bogiesan

September 25, 2007 at 4:43 pm in reply to: Mac pro occasionally hard locks.. anybody else?RAM is an easy binary test. Remove half of the sticks. Test. If results are positive, remove another half. Negative? swap back in the original other half, etc.
Mark the sticks with a Sharpie and take notes. You will never be able to keep track of the results.

> mean, that’s not possible is it??
such a wonderful program and such rudimentary bugs?? < 90% of the "bugs" turn out to be really dumb user errors. However, Apple left us some real stupid programming mistakes and unacceptably lame quality control on Motion 3. I don't think this is one of them but I don't do PAL work. > do we have to go back to AE, for we can’t rely on Motion to render
a 25fps clip correctly.. < That would be my suggestion, I ALWAYS default to AE. But you need to carefully examine your files. How do you really know what the specs are? Playing Animation codec files is never realtime without proprietary hardware support. bogiesan -

September 25, 2007 at 2:05 pm in reply to: Small Budget: Which Mac Works Well With FCP 6?You don’t need FCS2.
Buy the hardware, you can always upgrade the applications as your needs grow.Or, if you simply MUST have FCS2, get the minimum hardware but don’t scrimp on the graphics card and RAM. Hlol out for a used or refurbished Mac Pro. Check apple’s refurb site once a week.
Look at it this way, five years ago the same package would have cost your twice this amount and delivered none of the coolness.
