  • Mac pro occasionally hard locks.. anybody else?

I never get kernel panics, but occasionally, a couple times a week, my mac pro just up and hard locks. No force-quit, etc, etc.. have to hold down the power button… I’ve tested my ram using memtest86, and my system is relatively stock, other than a kona lhe & a firmtek sata card, which currently has nothing attached.

Most of the time it happens in motion or fcp, but a couple of days ago it happened in itunes.

The frustrating thing is, there’s no way I know of to debug such issues..

I’ve got a couple months left on the warranty, so I’d like to get this sorted out before that time arrives…

    Anybody?

You can check the apple.com forums for the hardware discussions.

Debugging Macintosh issues isn’t all that hard, it just takes a level of geeky exploration most of us pretend we won’t ever need to comprehend. You can explore dozens of Macintosh sites like MacFixit or invest in several excellent Macintosh OS/hardware books.

    Start running Activity Monitor.
    Start looking for trends.

My first bet is ram I have seen ram past those test yet still cause problems., (they arent all that intense of a test).

I would make an appointment at your local genius bar and let them take a look.

RAM is an easy binary test. Remove half of the sticks. Test. If results are positive, remove another half. Negative? swap back in the original other half, etc.

Mark the sticks with a Sharpie and take notes. You will never be able to keep track of the results.
