You apply scaling and mattes for the letterbox, render, and transcode to SDI. that’stwo or four more steps way from the original, we’re up to four, maybe generations of transcoding between diffrerent codecs.

Certainly. Give them an MPEG2 file that you have scrupulously examined for encoding keyframes and to which you have applied many thousands of weensy adjustments for every scene change.

CC Ball Action, tons fo fun.
Every individual element must be a carefully masked layer, though. Very difficult to do well without tons of practice but Ball Action is a delightfully quirky filter. You shoudl be able to enjoy it.What you cannot simulate very well are the marvelously spontaneous transitions that can only be achieved in stop action.

There is an area of interest (region of interest?) feature in AE7 and CS3, dunno if it’s part of AE6+.
With all huge pixel density comps, it’s best to prerender as many layers as possible and replace those layers with movies. If you actually have layers in the main comp that aren’t in use in the smaller one, don’t delete them, just turn them off.

Card of choice for Motion seems to be ATI’s 3870, or is 3780? OpenGL is meaningless so doin’t fallfor that pitch for After Effects.
Know that in FCP you cannot have more than two monitors hooked up (and only to one dual-head card) or a bunch of FxPlugs will fail so don’t go nuts on cards till Apple get this fixed.It’s your money, not mine. My advice is to buy equities, not a new Macintosh. Buy a used Intel. Tons of them on the market.

Umm, tell us what your plans for the future might be.
For you to invest in an HDV camera would be silly but investing in an HD camera would be equally silly if you cannot afford the capture system to support it.
All plugs for Final Cut that take you into 3 dimensions require huge learning phases and even longer rendering times. Forget 3D.
Forget all that stuff.
Get a new Macintosh, a nice 30″ Cinema display, a good UPS, and a huge stack of training materials to get you not only up and running but conversant with each of the roducts you already own.Everything else can wait.

If not, it’s time to dump this boob.
If he is, all you have to do is show him the metrics. for every hour of FLV he’s shooting take two to four hours to prepare for editing.
If you don’t care how much you bill him, Get yourself a copy of Adobe Media Player or Real Player version 11. These include utilities that will allow downloading of FLV movies form Web sites. You might even be able to use TubeSock or a similar utility to log onto his Mac and transcode to a decent codec while downloading.If you want to make money at this, you’ve got to streamline the process. You can either tell him it’s in his best interests to do it properly or you can simply present your bill.

To be honest, it doesn’t strike me as a particularly difficult effect and at present what i’m getting is the track playing fine. The image scales to the track too, to a beat of the track.What I can’t do is see anything in the audio graph to allow me to isolate the part of the track that i’d like the image to scale to.

Ah, so you really know what you’re doing in Motion, who knew? On the Internet, no one can tell you’re not a complete tyro.
But, no, I have not experienced this problem of yours. When I drop an audio clip into the well, it works as expected but only once all the settings are properly in place.
