FLV Editing Help!!!
Posted by Steve Woronko on October 12, 2008 at 9:52 pmI have a client who has a live streaming music show. He captures it to a hard drive as FLV. Most of the work flows I’ve seen say to convert to QT to edit in FCP. What’s the correct sequence setting so that I don’t have to render everything before editing? I’ve looked around, but can’t find anything that matches the TrueMotion VP6 compressor setting.
Also what’s the best way to export this out? One thing I forgot to mention is that these projects are 5-6 hours in 1 file. Any ideas, suggestion?
thanks in advance

Yes, meaning it won’t match your TrueMotion VP6 setting, you’ll need to convert to something such as DV, DVCPro50, or ProRes. I’d give ProRes a shot if I were you.

October 13, 2008 at 2:38 amI converted it to ProRes, it worked for the video. But the audio rate of the files is 22050Hz. The ProRes sequence setting for audio is 32Hz so the audio loses sync. What’s the best audio setting for FCP?
thanks for your help,

October 13, 2008 at 3:11 am48khz is FCP native, but you can change the sequence settings to 22500khz.

October 13, 2008 at 6:33 amI know I can change the audio rate in FCP, but when I’m exporting out of MPEG Streamclip, which is the best audio setting to use?

October 13, 2008 at 12:06 pmAs I said before, 48khz is native in FCP. FCP can handle other rates, but 48khz is preferable.

Silly decision probably based on a gross misperception of storage economics. Since the product must be edited, recording to a format that must be transcoded is wasted effort. Put a simple DV cmaera in the loop and record DV to the drive. Or, if this guy absolutely INSISTS on using .flv, record to tape in the camera.

October 13, 2008 at 3:59 pmI know FCP prefers 48Hz audio, but when the audio setting for using ProRes is 32Hz. When I’m exporting out of MPEG Streamclip which is the best audio format to use? Uncompressed, mpeg 2 or 3?

October 13, 2008 at 5:46 pmI agree. I just met this client and haven’t really had time to sit and find out all the details of his methods. I seriously doubt he’ll go the tape route since he usually films for 5-6 hours straight.
The other problem I’m having is audio drift. The sequence and clip settings are 32KHz but it’s still drifting. The original rate is 22050Hz. But it’s hard to really sync it up because of the bad quality.
I haven’t even really seen his setup, but I’m guessing it’s Flash? So, I don’t even know how to explain to him this workflow doesn’t work for editing.
I once again thought this was going to be an easy check that’s turned into a headache.
Thanks for all the responses

October 13, 2008 at 6:12 pmIs he paying you to correct his inability to comprehend a complex media?
If not, it’s time to dump this boob.
If he is, all you have to do is show him the metrics. for every hour of FLV he’s shooting take two to four hours to prepare for editing.
If you don’t care how much you bill him, Get yourself a copy of Adobe Media Player or Real Player version 11. These include utilities that will allow downloading of FLV movies form Web sites. You might even be able to use TubeSock or a similar utility to log onto his Mac and transcode to a decent codec while downloading. If you want to make money at this, you’ve got to streamline the process. You can either tell him it’s in his best interests to do it properly or you can simply present your bill.

October 13, 2008 at 6:22 pmHe’s using a PC desktop to capture his fooatage. Like I said, I just met him, so I haven’t really gotten with him to find out how flexible he will be with this. And of course there’s not much money involved, that’s why I thought it’d be an easy check, but the acquisition and export is turning into a pain.
Thanks again for you responses,
