A Rendering Question
I am using after effects 6.5.
I have a 6144 x 768 pixel size comp, of which I only want to render out the left hand side of the comp (3072 x 768).
To do this I created a 3072 x 768 composition and used the 6144 x 768 as the only layer, positioning the comp so that the left half was the only section displayed in the comp.
When I come to export the composition it takes as long as it would if I was exporing the 6144 x 768 comp. I’m guessing that this is because although it is not creating a movie clip with all the animation that is going on on the right hand side of the 6144 x 768 comp it still has to process it while rendering?
What I would like to know is if there is a way of telling After Effects to “ignore” the information that is not being displayed in the actual exporting comp, so that it speeds up the rendering process. I am also wondering if the final file size would be smaller too, or is it clever enough to know not to include that information that is not in the comp?
The only way I can think of at present to do it would be to duplicate my 6144 x 768 composition and then delete the layers that are on the right hand side of that comp.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I don’t often have the chance to learn new things in After Effects, however when I do I find that it always makes my life a lot easier/less stressful!

Instead of pre comping.. have you tried cropping in the render settings..click on the output module and then in the video output section there is a crop.. try using that.. see if that speeds things up..
i have never tried it before.. but it would be worth a try.. post back and let me know your results

There is an area of interest (region of interest?) feature in AE7 and CS3, dunno if it’s part of AE6+.
With all huge pixel density comps, it’s best to prerender as many layers as possible and replace those layers with movies. If you actually have layers in the main comp that aren’t in use in the smaller one, don’t delete them, just turn them off.
