We are also planning on putting our eggs in the BluRay basket.
We are planning on using a Sony Vaio in the field with a SxS card reader and Blu ray burner.
I am curios, which Bluray burner are you using and is it connected to a Mac?
    Thanks.

As far as Aja iOHD Frmware Details, I cannot find those details, basically I don’t know where to look. I am new this year to Macs.

Also in the AJA control panel setup was the line…..
Possible conflicting QuickTime components: No conflicting files found.

The firewire hook up is FW800 and have tried FW400 and it made no difference.
The cable is maximum 6 feet long.

The video format is CCIR 601 NTSC (40:27) and (video and audio) was ingested via SDI.
The FCP project is Apple ProRes HQ 422

I might add that the systems were set up by professional installers who were the resellers of the products.

Thanks for your input and timely responses to this issue.

April 3, 2008 at 9:33 pm in reply to: Serious Audio related issue with AJA IoHD

The issue is audio and video are out of sync while playback in FCPro, similar to Ravi’s issue.

The audio and video reside on the Sonnet drives. Playback of these files is thru the AJA ioHD. Rapid scrubbing enhances the problem and sometimes the sync problem just arises thru timeline navigation. If I stop playback, wait 2-3 seconds, resume playbck….viola sync has magically appeared.

The only reason I have system sounds (DVD, Adobe Encore playback etc.) routed thru the System line out(not handled by the AJA) is so I don’t get the echo while playing FCPro Audio. I have connected (from the MAC audio output) to the second input on the speakers so I can hear it. That way I don’t have to keep going into my System preferences to change it.

You are correct, it would be best to go thru a mixer, but that would not solve the sync issues handled by the AJA.

April 3, 2008 at 5:20 pm in reply to: Serious Audio related issue with AJA IoHD

We have the same issue of audio delay / latency / lip slip on two systems.
    AJA Io HD 5.1.1
    FCP 6.0.2
MAC OS X 10.4.11 2×3 Quad core Intel Xenon
    16 GB 667 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Sonnet 8TB
    AJA Gen 10 Sync generator

The echo problem has been resolved by System Line out switched to Built in Line out instead of the AJA out which makes sense.

We have made the changes within FCP….
Setting audio quality to LOW which is 48KHz.
    Setting video quality to HIGH.
    Setting frame rate to FULL
    Unchecking high quality scrub.

I did have luck hooking up the audio out of the Mac to a second input on the speakers so I can get system sound when playing DVDs or video clips on the desktop. This works nicely.
This may be obvious to most, but when I play a DVD using this setup the audio is dead on, but when system audio is pumped thru the AJA the sync is way off.

So, this is a known issue I am told, the rapid scrubbing and audio sync, but we get it with basic timeline navigation, which makes it a little difficult to edit and find audio que points. Can / will the issue be resolved? Is there a time frame? Should we get Kona cards? Could we be doing something wrong?

    Thank-you Walter.
I don’t think I would have found that answer in the users

    Thanks for the input Walter.
When you get the stand alone Panasonic up and running it will be interesting to hear the results.
One would think if the Panasonics didn’t work then a software update would fix it. I would take it that since the thread was DVD Studio Pro, then that was the software you were using.

I was wondering what brand of Blu Ray burner do you use in your Mac?
We have the latest and greatest FCPro systems being built now and there is some confusion as to which brand Blu Ray burner can be installed.
They have ordered Panasonics but they are telling us Apple has not approved this brand yet.
Also I would be curious which authoring software was used.
We have the Adobe CS3 suite on order and it’s my understanding I will be able to author a Blu ray disc with Encore.
    Thanks

October 18, 2007 at 2:23 pm in reply to: F70 – Firewire out or HDSDI out?

Thanks Andy and Wayne for the experienced input.
When I can actually touch, feel and use these devices, I think I’ll get it. We will have an AJA io HD, so I am hoping we can just capture Beta/DVCAM footage and up convert thru that device.
We do not have on order the optional PDBK-104 board.

The same goes for HD SDI out of the AJA back to the F75.

    Wayne Carey…
I prefer this method simply because we mix our footage with HDV and the HDV and XDCAM HD codecs are the most friendly codecs to work with using Final Cut Pro. We primarily use the DVCProHD codec to edit.

Did you mean to say these codecs are not the most friendly to work with?

Either way I hear what you’re saying, but isn’t one of the big advantages with file based work flow is that you don’t have to log and capture, and you just drag the clips over?
    I really don’t know.
I am very interested in this workflow as we have just purchased FCPro and the PDW F75 with a Sony Ex Camera and plan to put our express card data onto XDCAM HD discs.

Then we could ingest the footage as files and edit the MXF files. If we had to mix some HDV or up rezed Beta SP could you transcode those files to MXF so the timeline would be happy and then archive back to the F75 thru firewire and the original MXF files would stay in their native format.
Except for the fact that they started as MP4 files with the EX camera.

Thanks for any insight into our new workflow.

June 15, 2007 at 6:29 pm in reply to: PS comp size for 16:9 (widescreen)

That should work, but could cause problems down the road going thru the other programs you mentioned.
In Photoshop I like to use the preset NTSC DV Widescreen 720 x 480.
That has pixel aspect ratio of 1.2.
Since we digitize all of our footage thru analog component I change the 480 to 486. If I were coming thru firewire I’d leave it at 480.
This may or may not make any difference.

Either way if you stick with your way or whatever way you choose to go, do a TEST.
That is make you image size in PS and then make a perfect circle.
Use the Circle select tool and then fill. Bring that image to the next application and then the next and make sure it stays a circle thu-out all the way to NTSC playback if that is your deliverable.
Any clients that have a circle in their logo will appreciate this, and you can be assured your image is correct.
