Like many software, your computer hardware needs to meet a minimum system requirement in order to run Resolve.

Until version 15, Blackmagic provided a pdf listing these requirement depending on your system/OS of choice.
    https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/ConfigGuides/DaVinciResolve15/20180407-79c607/DaVinci_Resolve_15_Configuration_Guide.pdf

Even so this document is 2 years old, it should help you figure out if the reason of your crash is related to your hardware configuration. One thing that has always been a critical parts of a system to run Resolve is your GPU.

    Hope this help,

I believe we are missing information on your editor’s setup to help you troubleshoot further.

    Following are a few pointers:
. known issues with playing back Quicktime Apple ProRes file with Quicktime player and other players… gamma shift among others
. not all the players are created equal… they will use the OS resources differently, or bypass them completely.

    and a few questions/comments:
. which editing system does he use?
. can he reload your drp file in Resolve and check your file against his timeline using a difference matte?
. if your editor is already using Resolve, does he have the same settings than yours on your system? how about Color management settings?

May 23, 2020 at 8:36 pm in reply to: Fairlight bus format question

Got it. I thought you were talking about the control room monitor in the Fairlight page.
I am still on 16.2.1 and I have the same behavior than you do: Control Room meter in the EDIT page does not show 5.1 tracks out. I tried to refresh the UI Layout with no luck.

    Might be a bug?

Control Room will allow to monitor your master Main format mix output.
Right now it looks like your master output is 5.1 but your audio channels are stereo (you can see it in both the main mixer and on the EDIT page). You need to create 5.1 channels in order to see it in both your mixer and your edit page.
If you are creating from scratch, you can create 6 mono channels (L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs) and then link them as 5.1 surround. Or you could just import your 5.1 channels.

February 15, 2020 at 2:43 am in reply to: Your Technique for placing clips in the timeline

Personal preference? I think shortcut keys is faster…

Don’t forget you can customize your keyboard shortcut keys from DaVinci Resolve/Keyboard Customization…

  • Works here… same version on a Mac… Command + click allows you to skip clips.

February 10, 2020 at 4:45 pm in reply to: On install (v11) get a message that makes no sense.

Even so I agree the message does not make sense, you certainly have an incompatibility between the Resolve version and the OS version.

I would recommend you install version 15 or 16 in Mac OS High Sierra, unless you have a specific reason for not doing so.

Your other solution is to reverse to an older Mac OS version.

I am not sure about Resolve 12, but you can try the following:

    1. in Edit page, select the the new clip in the media pool.
    2. Then in your timeline, highlight the clip you want to change, ctrl-click and select in the local drop-down menu, Force to conform media
    3. assuming your TC and clip length is the same , it should replace the highlighted clip with the clip from the media pool

February 8, 2020 at 8:21 pm in reply to: Viewer changes color dramatically when playing.

[Alan Langdon] “The issue with playback gamma VS paused gamma seems like another thing. Maybe it’s the color space of the footage (GH5 10-bit imported into FCPX, edited there with 8-bit footage and then exported to ProRes HQ for Da Vinci…?”

Not knowing what your settings are, it could be an issue with your caching depending upon your choice of file format & codec

[Alan Langdon] “Many thanks and please shine some more light if you have some regarding my prosumer approach ☺”

I think you may want to spend some time learning the idea about “reference” and standards. They are many different parameters that will impact the way your movie will look like playing on your computer. The monitor obviously but also the applications you are using.

On a Mac, at the OS level, you have the International Color Consortium management (ICC) which will manage color profiles for your display.

At another level, each application will manage colors in a proprietary way, based on the selected ICC profiles of your system. Not all applications are transparent about how they do that.

Then you have the way your movie was encoded and the file format selected (wrapper and codec, i.e Quicktime, ProRes 422). Ideally your movie will be flagged with the right color space, gamma & standard (i.e Rec. 709, gamma 2.4). If not your player will guess what it is.

As you can see, unless you understand your workflow and how things are managed, a lot of things can go wrong.

[Alan Langdon] “but can’t one just get an aproximate look on the viewer so they can do OK corrections?”

You certainly could, but understand the limit of this approach. Don’t expect it to work other than your system. If your work is intended to be seen only on your computer system, it might work just fine. If you intend to broadcast to the world, you will run into many issues.

Last thing, to troubleshoot your playback issues, I would run some simple test. Try to do a roundtrip test in Resolve and see if you get the same problems. For example, color correct, export, re-import in Resolve. Apply a difference matte between the original and the re-imported movie, does it look the same?

    Good luck,

Sorry Ido I am working on a Mac and don’t have this issue…

I am guessing you have checked all your settings in Resolve Preferences? what is the resolution (pixel size) of your monitor? which GPU are you using? did you update your Windows 10 driver?

Have you tried to re-install Resolve? which version of 16 are you using?
