I own this deck. It is rock solid. I use it every day. I use it to capture via firewire directly to the G5 or you can also set it up for use to capture to other codecs via S-video or composite video.
It interfaces well with FCP and has been a workhorse for me.

Coming from Aurora, this was easily the smartest and best move. The support is worth the price of admission. This company is also always improving their products and have a very diverse product line on Mac and XP platforms.

This will take a bit more time and you might want to do it only on your finsihsed clips, but I would capture it all at DVCPRO50 and then use a droplet in Compressor to do th eupconvert. I have been doing this to DV footage with amazing results. Compressor usins SHAKE’s optical flow technology and if you set up a preset properly you can create a really great looking progressive image, as the 720P is.
I think compresso will handle this better than FCP will because you have more control over the outcome.
My recents tests have all been done after watching this great tutorial on how to do this with 4X3 footage. You can even download the droplets from the tutorial.
Check this out. Even at the best settings the clips render fast, you might want to do it with all of the captured material. and just imoprt it and edit away with no rendering. Take the time to watch this.

My advice. Output several different types of edl’s. You can export CMX 3600, Sony, or Grass Valley edl’ s formats with Final Cut.
The limitation might be on what type od edl the SMOKE can read.The compatibility of the edl will also depend on how well you logged and captured your footage (reel names, etc)
FCP edits in interlaced video. If you recapture the progressive footage as progressive footage in the smoke then the TC and reel numbers should be fine.
Just a hint here, your post is erratic, not specific enough and when you do not describe what you are trying to do it makes it harder for people to help you out. For example, I have no idea what frame rate you are editing in, all I can tell is that you started in FCP and want to end in smoke. please be more specific if you want help. Tell us about your workflow, maybe then we can help.

5.1.2 is not bacwards compatible with even 5.1.1.
Solution.
Use XML to export the 5.1.2 sequence for finishing. In terms of the whole project. Upgrade all the rooms to 5.1.2, that will be the easiest way to go.
With the new release Apple’s cull of Liceneces has started, so we are going to see this question more and more.
