Mr. Video is FLAT OUT WRONG!!! WRONG WRONG!!!. The F900 is NOT uncompressed. It records to the HDCAM format which is a 3:1:1 compression and color scheme. The signal recorded to tape is compressed.
Here are some things to think about:
F-900 HDCAM records the same size picture as HDV 1440×1080 (with a different compression scheme) It records 1080 24 P images
Varicam Records 4:2:2 720P 24P (smaller frame size (1280×720) but progressive image)Varicam allows you to shoot true(film style) vari speed footage
HDX-900 records 720P (1280×720) or 1080P (1920×1080) 24 frame material.Consider the following factors
1. HDCAM deck rental charges (1500perday) or dubbing charges vs a Panasonic 1200a or 1400A for capturing.
2. HDCAM means traditional OFFLINE/ONLINE workflow (no native HDCAM support in FCP).
3. HDX-900 means you can edit on firewire drives and deliver that same FULL QUALITY sequence to a digital house for a film out.
4. PS: you could also record that same sequence to HDCAM or D5 if you want to.if you want, you can contact me off board (click on my head for my e-mail) and I will explain this in more detail.

Why are people so prone to not wanting to buy software or music? It’s like it’s your god given right to enjoy this stuff for free. This little $19.95 purchase will make your life easier. It is not free with the Pro Version. It is an add on that will let you rip anything into any codec you can think of.David

Your friend probably had Flip4mac installed. This very worthwhile plugin give Quicktime wmv capabilities. You simple can export to wmv with FCP, compressor as you wish.
It is worth every single penny.

The solution to your DVD problem is this;
Go to the apple site and for 29$ buy the MPEG2 component for quicktime.
Go to the Squared 5 software site and download MPEG STREAMCLIP (it’s free)
THis allows you to open DVD VOB files and save them into any QT format you want.
Believe me. Save yourself the headaches, you’ll never want to do it any other way.

Why not make a dub from the DVD to VHS with the captions on? This will save you having to subtitle the entire show, which is laborious and time consuming.

Just a little fact.
Final Cut Pro is the most widely used editing software on Earth. It has more purchased, licenced installs than ANYONE else.
That should make your decision pretty simple. I have used AVID, Discreet edit, Media 100, Editdroid, Premiere, and others. Few offer the features, interface, ease of use and downright non facist approach that Final CUt Pro offers.

A few thoughts.
Multicam:
First off, you need a pretty fast array to pull nine streams of DV. I don’t think it will work on the firewire drive attached to a laptop. If you look at apple tutorials using multicam you will notice that the files are usually captured at smaller frame sizes (like 360×240) to make the multicam eding much easier by using smaller files and small data rates. At DV with nine streams you are asking the drives to access nine files on nine different parts of a full disk with a data rate of 3.8mbs . The pure math and pyhsics makes this dificult. You might have to go to a smaller frame size for your offline but tweak the photoJpeg quality (create an easy setup with a higher data rate.Advantage, you will probably be able to edit pretty seemlessly. Disadvantage (you will be using the computer monitor (as I am not sure the frame size will play out the LS.

You can configure the JH3 to play out at 23.98. Then setup a 23.98 capture preset and you are off to the races. TO do this in DV (if you want to go that way, but do a test first to see if you can edit nine angles)then just create an easy setup with DV at 23.98. You can deselect the remove advance pulldown box when you do this.
Advance pulldown removal only applies to the metadata recorded in DV or DV HD streams. IE. It would apply to any camera that shoots 29.97 or 59.94 that can record these flagged frames. SONY HD camera’s do not do this. If it were shot on Varicam or HDX900’s then you could use this feature.
I am not sure if your card (the LS) can do pulldownor pullup on the fly. You could capture it all DV and cut at 29.97 and then matchback(do not attempt this, find a way to cut 23.98 natively.
Not sure what you are doing for the online but if you were planning to put this to HDCAM or SR for mastering then you need to have a tri level sync to output at the 23.98 framerate. You might want to finish this 59.94 if it is for Broadcast delivery.
