If you mean the consumer cameras, Final Cut does not support these devices. You might be able to copy the material onto your hard drive and use something like MPEG Streamclip to transcode them.

I had a question that could be tacked onto this topic. A client gave me half minidvs, and half dvds. I have a Sony DSR-11 deck and final cut pro 4.5. I captured the minidvs fine, but I cant figure out a way to capture the dvd footage. Is it possible to hook the dvd player upto the s-video/rca ins on my deck, then change the capture device preset to non controllable, to capture the dvd footage? Or is my best bet to rip the footage and demux the sound, then import it in?

whoops I forgot to add. I can view the dvd footage on my external monitor but FCP wont recognize the dvd player through my DV deck. I tried switching th DV deck to S-video or even video, and FCP still won’t get the dvd signal(video or audio)

The solution to your DVD problem is this;

Go to the apple site and for 29$ buy the MPEG2 component for quicktime.

Go to the Squared 5 software site and download MPEG STREAMCLIP (it’s free)

THis allows you to open DVD VOB files and save them into any QT format you want.

Believe me. Save yourself the headaches, you’ll never want to do it any other way.

If the squared five software says you need it,

then just buy it.
Its $19.95.

Why are people so prone to not wanting to buy software or music? It’s like it’s your god given right to enjoy this stuff for free. This little $19.95 purchase will make your life easier. It is not free with the Pro Version. It is an add on that will let you rip anything into any codec you can think of.
