  • Media 100 or Final Cut Pro?!?

I have been a Media 100 user for almost ten years. I am currently working with 7.5i that operates on OS9 on my G4. It is obviously time to upgrade to a system that operates on OSX. I am looking at the Media 100 SD&HD suite.

I have never worked with Final Cut Pro. I would appreciate any thoughts and advice about either of the two products. I also use DVD studio Pro and AfterEffects on a regular basis.

I want to also add that I have never had any major problems with my Media 100 system.

    Thank you.

There’s lots of Media 100 to FCP converts, so you will have lots of support. M100 and FCP are more similar to each other than both are to Avid. FCP will be cheaper, so you’ll get more bang for the buck.

    Good Luck.

    Steve,

Do you ever edit other people’s material, do ever edit other people’s at their facilities?

If the answer is yes, then you must gauge how many companies in your area use M-100 vs how many use FCP. As soon as I switched over from Discreet Edit and became proficient on FCP (30-days later), life became good. I quickly found that demand was high — there were more clients around me who wanted to edit in my FCP bay, and there were numerous facilities around me who needed my expertise on the systems they already owned.

So, its not really about comparing the capabilities of Media 100 to FCP, its about running a business that keeps you productively employed. Here in L.A. these days FCP is the ticket — up there in the rainy Nothwest maybe its different, but, somehow I doubt that.

    Good luck,
    DRW

Switched from M100 to FCP 2 years ago and have never looked back! You can do so much right inside FCP. To able to add a Blur, Crop ect.. without leaving FCP is great! One of things you will find different is unlike M100 that imports everything into it’s codec, FCP imports almost any codec but then you may have render the file. So the waiting is changed from import to render after the file is in the timeline.

As a M100 user from v1.0, I read all the switch to FCP posts for a couple of years before switching. I miss
a couple of M100 things, but the change-over was very painless (log and capture was the biggest cahnge for me).
I wish Boris well with M100, they’re a great company, but the boat sailed a long time ago.

I also switched two years ago from version 7.x. I really like using FCP and can do much more in the program. Two M100 features I miss are mixing resolutions on the timeline and M100’s excellent media management (especially for uprez and recapturing). I don’t miss the two video tracks and single graphic track interface (now greatly improved in the latest M100 version).

If you are buying a new Apple computer and you say you use DVD Studio Pro you will have to upgrade. FCStudio is the only path when upgrading so you will get FCP. If you don’t like it upgrade your M100.

    Just a little fact.

Final Cut Pro is the most widely used editing software on Earth. It has more purchased, licenced installs than ANYONE else.

That should make your decision pretty simple. I have used AVID, Discreet edit, Media 100, Editdroid, Premiere, and others. Few offer the features, interface, ease of use and downright non facist approach that Final CUt Pro offers.

I’m another M100 convert (about 10 years on M100) This was the best thing I’ve ever done. No regets at all. I’m cutting faster and better than I ever have before. Love all the plug-ins for FCP, the workflow from FCP to compressor to DVD, seamless. Just do it.

Thank you to all of you for taking the time to respond to my question. It looks like Final Cut Pro is the way to go.

May the new year hold nothing but success and good health for you.

    Best regards,

    Steve
