The canvas only displays 1 field of video information. You need to view this text on an external monitor or broadcast monitor. The computer monitor is a reference only and does not comly with NTSC video standards.
The other thing you are seeing is DV artifacting. In the DV codec you can expect text to be less sharp than other video codecs because of the color sampling rate of DV.

Why?
Do you think you can bump the quality of DV by converting it to 8 bit uncompressed. Your best bet is to stick with the DV. You might want to change the sequence to DVCPRO50 (which works int he 4:2:2 color space but that is about as much as you will want to bump it up.

This is a CROSS convert not an UP convert. UP Conversion is SD to HD. You are asking about HD to HD cross conversion.
The Kona 2 does not do CROSS Conversion.
1. You have the optiion of placing your 720P sequence into a 1080P sequence and rendering that sequence. You could then output the 1080P sequence to the HDCAM deck.
2. Have to 720P output to a 1400A deck. Then recapture from that deck at 1080P (let the deck handle to upconversion)
You should also let us know if this is 23.98 or 59.94 because that will make a huge difference when deciding how to finsih.

A very simple philosophy would be to make sure all of your “MEDIA” (digitized footage, stills, movies, renders, etc is stored on an external drive or any drive that is not the boot drive of the computer. The PROJECTS can be stored locally with a backup on the external drives.

Are you seeing this on the external monitor?
Are your FCP windows sized to 25%, 50% or a round number instead of “fit to all”.
With the little info you have posted these are my best guesses.

Hey Brian,
I can completely understand why this movie would not play back from the book drive on the laptop. Maybe try copying it to a Firewire raid with at least a FW800 speed port.
You are asking the machine to play an uncompressed file from a drive that is 5400rpm and is also running the operating system. Most machines will not do this.
If you ahve to play it as a file then you might want to use DVCPRO50 as the compressor to playback that file, but move it off the boot drive if you want reliability.

Everything from the PVW seriw up has a drop out compensator built in. The best machine for critical and very clean BetaSP capture is probably the DVW-A500 which is a D-Beta deck that plays back Beta SP tape. You could probably also rent a JH3 deck, which is aso very clean, but do not go for th UVW series, no drop out compensators built in.

Maybe this needs to be exported as an OMF, then converted in Protools or Logic or Nuendo or a software program like that.
