Storing imported audio files
Im in the process of setting up a new FCP system and I want to make sure I get my file structure set up properly. Right now I have a folder on my primary drive that is titled FCP projects (where I will store all info relating to the project) and I have a folder on my external raid titled Final Cut Pro Documents (This is where I will capture media). My question is if I import an audio file where should that file be stored permanently?..should it go to the project file or the documents file. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

A very simple philosophy would be to make sure all of your “MEDIA” (digitized footage, stills, movies, renders, etc is stored on an external drive or any drive that is not the boot drive of the computer. The PROJECTS can be stored locally with a backup on the external drives.

First off, when you import something, FCP doesn’t “import it” per se. It doesn’t copy it to the Capture Scratch disk. No, what it does is create a clip that points to where the file is. So if it is on your system drive, it will point to it on the system drive. If it is on the media drive, it will point to it on the media drive.
You put it where you want it, then import it into FCP. Best place would be the Media drive…Capture Scratch.
