Thanks Walter, I tested by creating a few nulls nearer the camera and they do show up so it was just that the original nulls are way of screen

Thanks again I will be sure to watch the tutorial you suggested

    Thanks Ann

The grid effect would be ideal but I haven’t managed to get the grid effect to display a grid that lines up with the rule of thirds, perhaps its just me could you share your settings thanks

  • Thank you Theo, much appreciated

I was expecting the start and end controls to have some effect but they do not effect a dip to white or any other dissolve based transition, dip to black, film dissolve etc.

The preview panels in the effect controls area do update as you scrub the start and end points but the dissolve itself does not change.

You can try it for yourself drop a dissolve transition across 2 clips, move the play head to a point where you can see the transition happening between the clips then scrub the start and end controllers for the transition. The preview panels below the start/end controls show the effect of the changes but the it does not change the transition itself highlighted by the play head. The start end points have no effect on the transition itself only on the preview panel displays ?!

I would be grateful if you could try this and let me know if you have the same results or whether I have a glitch on my system.

I wouldn’t say it operates as expected, and all NLE’s don’t all operate the same as you have kindly highlighted that FCP 7 apparently have designed the effect and executed it as it should work. I suspect its still a glitch in the programming.

I would be interested to hear if avid dip to white allows you to finish on white.

Don’t get me wrong I love premiere, it’s a fantastic product, I think communities like these and our discussions ultimately encourage Adobe to deliver a more flexible and desirable product.

Kris, if applied to a split clip it goes to white then back to video as one would expect.

Bret, I tested again with a color matte below and when applied to the end of a clip i.e. not sitting across 2 clips it does go white to transparent rather than black, it just shows black if you don’t have another clip or color matte underneath.

Ann, thank you for the suggestion

Thanks all for your replies it looks like at the moment keyframing is the only option.

Thanks for the reply Jeff and for suggesting the alternative way of achieving the desired result.

I cant see how dipping to white then to Black is what was envisioned when Adobe implemented a preset called “dip to white”. It looks like I will just add it as a feature request to expand/correct the start/end functionality.

    Thanks for the reply Bret,

I called it a bug because when placed at the end of a clip as discussed it doesn’t dip to white then back to the original clip, its dipping to white then fades to black, why black ? The start and end point functionality that Kris suggested would be ideal to solve the issue if they did give full access to its dipping behaviour but unfortunately they don’t.

I could dissolve to a white solid or use levels as Kris suggested but I was trying to go the easy quick route if it worked the way I wanted/expected, unfortunately it doesn’t seem to.

I am still hoping a user can advise if it works differently in CS6 or perhaps the start end functionality has been updated.
