Call Sony Creative Software directly. When I upgraded from Pro 8 to Pro 12 they gave me a discount that was equal to the initial upgrade special that I missed by about two months.

Your CPU is what is slowing your render speeds down. AMD has never been known as a ‘great’ CPU for video editing.
Latest Intel i7 (even previous model) will give you much better results.

Why the fascination with GPU talk? Are you having timeline playback issues with your system? Unless you are editing 4k any well-configured Intel i7 system should play back fine.

No, from the Windows Event Viewer, which is part of Administrative Tools in the control panel.

What does the Windows Event Viewer say? You’ll see your crashes listed in there with the applicable date and time. Open one up by double-clicking and tell us what the error message says. Whatever it says will be the cause of your crashing.

Personally, I am glad there is no way to DM other members on this board. Having topics/questions out in the open is best for all, since many of us (myself included) read probably every thread, to learn new things.
On another message board (not related to video editing) some people consider my an expert on the topics we discuss (auto-related) and at times I get bombarded with questions via DM, and I never have enough time to read them all, let alone answer them all. I don’t like ignoring people, since that can be kind of rude, but a message board is there for a reason!

You should have 8gb of RAM as a minimum. Personally, 16gb is really where you need to be (at a minimum) with modern video editing workstations. With the price of RAM so cheap nowadays, it’s best run with 16gb at least.

Are some of the files used on the project on an external drive, or where they originally on an external drive?

It all depends on what the final destination will be. Broadcast? Bluray? Etc….

I wouldn’t try editing RAW on an i3 system. Time to upgrade to the latest Intel i7 and 16gb RAM. The software version isn’t really the bottleneck here, but I’d upgrade to the latest, too.
