I often run a similar setup without experiencing any noise. I don’t think it is a characteristic of the camera so it could be a bad cable. Best of luck.

Perhaps you already checked this but did you make sure that you had your gain turned off? I’ve heard of horror stories from people who have accidently left it on from shooting in dark interiors and then taken the camera outside. While it does not always look evident in the camera monitor it sure shows up in the footage.

Matt speaks the truth. I had an editor just do a project for me on a 20″ iMac but he did beef up the RAM which helped a ton. The FW 800 is limiting when you have the option of eSATA on the MacPro but it is doable. The intel chip does a decent job of rendering quickly in FCP 6 and Motion.

Do a search and look at old posts. This seems to come up every few weeks. You should NEVER dump the original files. After they are ingested into FCP as quicktime files they can only be read by FCP. What if you wanted to use the footage for something else? Jim’s question of whether you would toss the master tapes is valid. Why would you?

Ditto to what everyone has said. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the cost of keeping all these extra hard drives full of stuff that they don’t access on a regular basis. I don’t get it! Even backing up both the P2 mxf files and the QT show files on a raid 1 it is still cheaper than tape. We need to view hard drives as expandable and simply the cost of doing business.

Lenmar makes a good one that I have. I also have a bunch of their batteries which seem to work as well as the OEM. I would not trust all of the ones on ebay.

I had several hot days on a shoot last summer and I did notice that it seemed to be a little sluggish as well. My raid was also at the max temp. I tried to do the downloads in a cooler environment and that seemed to help a little. I have used the cards many, many times since with no issues.

The P2 Store is essentially obsolete with the 32 GB cards since you can only fit the contents of 1 card on it. There is a firmware update to read the 16 GB cards so I imagine there will be one for the 32 GB cards. I got rid of my P2 Store right before Leopard so I am not aware of any issues there.

March 15, 2008 at 1:38 pm in reply to: P2 vs. DVCPRO HD tape

[Chris Monette] “In terms of archiving, this is the strategy we were thinking of if we went P2: We shoot, transfer the footage to the edit system (FCP 6) and then backup all of the footage to a large capacity firewire drive (like a lacie 1 tb drive, which here in Canada I can get for $350). Do you think that this is a viable strategy? “

I would consider buying a raid 1 system (mirrored). That way, once the data leaves the P2 card it is backed up in two places. If one drive goes bad you’ve got one more chance to save it. I have used this system this with over 30 TB of data and not had a problem (knock on wood). I sleep easier knowing that it is in two places.

I use a Sans-Digital raid and 500 GB or 750 GB drives that I just swap out as needed. Just label each set “A” and “B” and you are good to go. I then use a Sans-Digital single drive reader to read the files into FCP. The other drive goes in a safe place. Even using two drives, the cost is cheaper than tape.

I agree with the 16GB size. It about the length of a normal tape at 720P 24PN. That way you are forced to back up quickly. Imagine how bad it would be to have 160+ minutes on a 32GB card and have something go wrong. That’s a lot of reshooting.
