I’ve been noticing recently that editors on long form content who switch between PP and FCP7 are getting used to what the 64bit NLEs are capable of and therefore not following the FCP7 32bit rules.
I’ve been helping out on a doc, all footage was transcoded to prores with each day’s footage on a timeline. Some timelines are four hours, as would be expected, it’s been i/o error ‘out of memory’ city.
It’s like the Louis CK bit about wifi on a plane, once something is possible, it’s just expected.

That is one option, you can also rewrap the mxf files to quicktime without transcoding if you have the Avid QT codecs installed.
The expensive/best way is with the Hamburg MXF import plugin, you don’t even have to rewrap the MXF files, it handles them natively. It’s around $300, but if you are going to be doing a lot of work with DNxHD files it’s a great tool to have.

Really? My understanding is that any multi-core intel mac can utilize GCD. (Although those with hyperthreading do a better job)
the Xeon CPUs in the nMP don’t have hardware accelerated h.264 support either, but the D300s-D700s do.

The main reason the ‘legacy’ mac pro doesn’t handle h.264 as well as an iMac or MBP is that the Xeon processors do not have hardware h.264 decoding built in.
Are there any upgrade GPUs that have it? I think the 7950 does.

Do those numbers deduct how many hours clients expect an editor nowadays to be a ‘colorist’, and an ‘audio sweetener’?
Those used to be completely separate jobs.

If you contact the Neat video guys they have an unreleased beta that works with the cards in the nMP. It works great after that.
In case you didn’t know, go into the hidden optimization settings to enable the GPUs.

I have heard and read good things about Miraizon, but it doesn’t change my mind about Windows.
Although Windows has gotten better, the times I do have to boot into it I’m amazed how much stuff has to happen, and install, and update, and (random activity here) just to shut down or restart. It’s a tradeoff of time I’m not willing to make.

That is a great idea, and something does need to be done in the sound department. I hope you send a feature request for that.
As far as not being able to go to Protools well, XtoPro had my sound person think I had suddenly developed OCD with how well the tracks were laid out on his end.
