I was given a DNxHD file in an MXF wrapper and need to work with it in FCPX. Is converting it to ProRes my best option and, if it is, what’s the best way to do it.

I would just download BlackMagic DaVinci Resolve, import all the mxf, put them into a timeline, render all out again as prores.

It’s free and can work as a great converting hub. And also later as you coloring stage as well

    🙂

That is one option, you can also rewrap the mxf files to quicktime without transcoding if you have the Avid QT codecs installed.

The expensive/best way is with the Hamburg MXF import plugin, you don’t even have to rewrap the MXF files, it handles them natively. It’s around $300, but if you are going to be doing a lot of work with DNxHD files it’s a great tool to have.

Maybe a dumb question, but how do I rewrap the files? That seems like the best option for my situation.

Clipwrap is a pretty handy thing to have around.
