I don’t see any mention of this update on Adobe’s website. Is this available via the Updater application only?

One thing to note is that if your first keyframe is set as an ‘ease out’ keyframe you won’t notice any difference if you change it to an ‘easy ease’ keyframe. The only difference between these two (at their default settings) is that the ease out keyframe uses linear temporal interpolation as the playhead approaches it (in) and bezier temporal interpolation as it leaves it (out). An ‘ease in’ keyframe does the inverse, bezier interpolation incoming and linear outgoing. An ‘easy ease’ keyframe defaults to bezier interpolation on incoming and outgoing values.
If there are no keyframes before the easy ease keyframe then there is nothing to interpolate from, so it is effectively a constant. The same is true if there are no keyframes after the easy ease keyframe, it can be thought of as an ease in keyframe because there is nothing to interpolate on the outgoing side.

The lights don’t generally add that much render time, it’s the shadows that kill ya!
My recommendations are working at half res, reducing the shadow map size for your composition temporarily (you can do this in the composition settings) or turning ‘casts shadows’ off for all of your lights temporarily.
Do your lighting and your compositing separately, so that once you have the lights the way you like them turn on Draft 3D (which disables lights and depth of field) just to the right of the Live Update button at the top of your timeline. Draft 3D is super zippy, but you’ll want to do a couple of spot checks of your final composite to make sure there are now shadow issues.

If you’re using the text as a track matte for the video then you’ll want to apply the drop shadow to the video layer. Otherwise you’ll have to be more specific about how it is you’re filling the text with the video.

You also want to make sure that the 3D layer has its Accepts Lights property turned to ‘On.’ You can access this by selecting the layer and pressing ‘aa’ once it’s a 3D layer.

If you have the default set to linear it’s very easy to add bezier curves. You can either do the inverse of what you did to solve your problem, right click and go to Keyframe Interpolation and set the spatial to Auto Bezier (or one of the other options). Or you can just use the pen tool to drag bezier handles out of any keyframe.
I prefer starting with linear and adding the curves myself, it gives me a greater degree of control.

There’s been trouble with getting this to work for a lot of folks on Win XP. I’m not sure what the issue is.

It sounds like you’re having a problem with your Luma and Chroma levels being out of the legal range for NTSC. I doubt you have the tools in iMovie to fix this.
There are options in AE for bringing the troublesome levels into line. The most straightforward method would be to put a Levels effect on an Adjustment Layer above your footage with the output white set to 235 and the output black set to 16.
This is a rough way of doing this. You’d be better off doing the legalization in something like Premiere or Final Cut Pro where you can monitor the IRE levels of the Luma and Chroma and make adjustments accordingly.

I was going to recommend playing with a combination of a Radial Gradient, Fractal Noise, Texturize (or CC Glass or another similar effect) and Colorama. You beat me to the punch ;P
