The AE expression language is JavaScript packaged with extra pre-written classes and objects (these are what you see if you click on the drop-down menu next to the expressions field).
If you really want to understand what’s going on, then your best bet would be to familiarize yourself with JavaScript’s syntax and structure through a more general tutorial. After that look at more specific AE related tutorials as it does have its own little quirks.
http://www.motionscript.com is a great resource for AE specific code and is maintained by this forum’s own Dan Ebberts.
You can try https://www.w3schools.com/js/ for general JavaScript information, keeping in mind that AE is different than most web applications in that it re-evaluates the expression on every frame.

While it’s true that if there are details clipped on either end of the spectrum (highlights/shadows) you won’t be able to bring those back satisfactorily, you might be able to increase local contrast using the Shadows/Highlights effect or a collection of mattes/adjustment layers.
The short answer is: no. But the long answer is: maybe if you’re willing to accept that you’ll only be able to regain a limited amount of detail or the footage won’t look very good.

Well, just in case you were Simulating Output, this is from AE’s LiveDocs:
“Whether or not color management is enabled for the project, After Effects does not manage the color of previews on an external video monitor. The colors sent to the external video monitor are in the project

[bogiesan] “What’s a UV map?”
A UV Map is a map of texture coordinates for an object. I suppose the letters UV were kind of arbitrary, but I believe they’re used in order to differentiate from XY(Z) coordinates. The UV Map is two dimensional (U and V), and any given UV coordinate corresponds to a specific location on a 3D surface. Thus, if you’re using UV mapping you will be painting your texture in on top of an exported graphical representation of the object’s UV coordinates:

Oh, and in the future, render with an alpha channel from your 3D app =)

[Sopwith] “Any way preserving the alpha but still using “screen” mode on the volumetric etc.”
Using the screen mode will not work. You should set the layer to use itself as a matte using the Channel > Set Matte effect. Set “Use For Matte” to Luminance (lighter areas = more opaque, darker = more transparent).
Then you’ll probably also want to apply a Channel > Remove Color Matting effect to remove the black fringing you will get around the beam.

First let me say that I’m sure there are a few different ways to do this, but here’s how I would:
base = 4;
seedRandom(index);
dec = random(0,99) / 100;
base + dec;The easiest way to change the ‘speed’ of a random() function in AE is to use the posterizeTime(x); function which only returns the value of the expression x times per second:
base = 4;
seedRandom(index);
posterizeTime(1);
dec = random(0,99) / 100;
base + dec;Would return a new random 4.xx number once every second, you could use a Slider expression control on the layer to control the posterizeTime() function.
It should be mentioned that there will still be jumps from number to number using this method (as they are still random numbers, only they are evaluated less frequently). If you want smoother transitions between values you should use the wiggle(); expression.

What, my slap-dash 2 second tutorial wasn’t good enough for you? (;

Windows should handle the 8GB of RAM in the same way it would handle 8GB of RAM in a PC box.

[jochem] “hoe do I render the black of the branches to alpha”
Since the branches have transparency, they already have an alpha channel. If you want a matte from this alpha channel you can either use one of the alpha track matte modes or use Channel > Shift Channels to set Alpha to Full On, Red to Alpha, Green to Alpha and Blue to Alpha.
