What’s frustrating for me, is that they seem to know what the issues are and yet refuse to tell anyone…

What’s the deal?! Knowledge is power!

Just because I’m out of ideas… try rendering to Lossless and letting FCP conform the footage to your sequence settings.

[digital kookie] “Does anyone think that 1360×768 is a little strange as a resolution or is this fairly common.”

That is close to a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is a pretty standard widescreen ratio, but the resolution itself seems unusual… Probably only because I’m not accustomed to screens that support it, usually a widescreen monitor has a higher resolution in my experience.

How are you exporting from Final Cut Pro? What are your sequence settings?

[Steve Roberts] “.. use square pixels, in other words. :-)”

    Indeed (;

[Darby Edelen] “your best bet would be to compose/render at the precise resolution of the monitor (1360 x 768) using square pixels.”

October 30, 2007 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Animating a deck of cards, the smart way

I did a similar animation of 16 cards in AE for a memory game special feature on a children’s DVD. The way I managed it was creating the animation I wanted once, then duplicating the 2 layers (front & back of the cards) 15 times, then opt-dragging replacement front layers on to each of the front layers, then moving the layers as I needed. In my case this was into 4 different rows with 4 columns, in your case it sounds like it would mean offsetting the animation keyframes in time.

It’s a bit of a pain, but it’s definitely not the hardest part of the process. It took me much longer to design the front of every card.

Here’s an expression from Dan Ebberts that will help you immensely with the flipping animation:

[digital kookie] “The Monitor is set to 1360 x768 resolution.”

Since you’re rendering for a computer there shouldn’t be any pixel aspect ratio considerations. If the video is going to playback fullscreen then your best bet would be to compose/render at the precise resolution of the monitor (1360 x 768) using square pixels.

As for framerate, it doesn’t really matter, but I would stick to 30fps. Too low and your motion will be jerky, too high and you have unnecessary information that will only bloat your file size and render time.

One of your considerations should be how you will compress the video, as lossless or uncompressed video will not display smoothly from a standard hard drive. I recommend using the Photo JPEG codec at its highest quality, this will look nearly flawless and should run smoothly off of a standard hard drive.

***DO NOT INTERLACE!!*** Your video is going to be displayed on a computer monitor, a progressive display device. If you interlace then the fields will be very noticeable.

You’re using HDTV (Rec. 709) as the working space of your project as well as making sure the imported footage is interpreted correctly?

October 29, 2007 at 3:40 pm in reply to: A new way to simulate “real 3D” in AE

    [Erland Kjensli] ”
This computes the angle between the footage position and the camera position on the XZ plane around the Y axis. The inverted TAN function only works from 0 to 90 degrees so I have to make it check which quadrant of the circle it is in, and then add 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees accordingly.”

Math.atan2(y, x) takes 2 parameters and returns the arc tangent of them properly regardless of what quadrant they lie in. Depending on your application there may be an angle offset that you’ll need to add.

For future consideration, try compressing your QuickTime movs with streaming “Fast Start” enabled. I’d comment on the technique, but the movie has been loading with no preview for the past 3 minutes.
