As a guy about to jump into HD also, this is confusing to me.
Are you saying, if I edit a show 24p in FCP and DON’T want to
lay off to tape through a KONA, but DO want to post it online or make a DVD,
I’ll need to make a QT from my sequence and run it through
After Effects? So I need to spend another
grand or more to output NOT on tape?Dan

So you are saying its works back with FCP 4.5,
but it does not work with 5.1.2 ?
I haven’t tried it since 4.5 either.Is there another app (preferably not one that costs a grand)
that we could use to just record a DV Stream with timecode and audio out
from the camera? It would need to do it with the DVCPRO100 codec for me.
Maybe there is one on the PC side, and we can just boot into Windoz to do it
on the Intel machines.Dan

There must be a way to make FCP think it IS controlling a machine
and then it wouldn’t quit recording.
If you can roll a digibeta deck then hit “capture now” with FCP
in deck control mode, and FCP records the deck timecode,(which it does)
then why would you not be able to do the same thing from a
DV camera with it’s deck recording?
Unless of course, the DV camera isn’t feeding timecode out FW
at this point. Maybe they don’t do that. Maybe TC only is sent
when the camera deck is in play mode.Dan

I hope this is fixed too.
I planned on using a new Macbook Pro 17 inch to record on the set,
from a new Panasonic HDX 900 in HD. (the SDX900 didn’t have FW out
but the HDX does).
Can you still do it with “non controllable device”?
I know you won’t have camera timecode though.Dan

But the likelyhood the output picture looks like the used DV camera option

Well yeah Kevin, I was just trying to help him get decent video on a monitor
for very low cost. But he could also buy a card like the Aurora Fuse-X card
for $499 that has s video in/out too, or many other choices. -

I don’t know what you want to spend, but go on eBay and find a used
Sony (or other) consumer DV camera, making sure it has s-video out.
You feed it with firewire from your G5 and take the output video to
your monitor and the output audio to your mixer-out to your speakers.
The video quality will be pretty much the same as any card.
This should cost you very little.Dan
