  • Need to add 3:2 Pull-Down to 24p Footage

Posted by Tristan004 on September 28, 2006 at 6:42 pm

I am posting a feature doc shot in 24p HD with the Panasonic HDX-200 P2 Camera. The Mac has a Aja Kona Card, which does the pull-down through the outputs. Problem is, I need to export it as an uncompressed file in 29.97 DF mode in HD.

This is our station’s first foray into the HD realm and we don’t even have an output deck yet (we’re gearing up for a tapeless solution). Anyway, the company doing the closed captioning said they could take the program in a QT file format, so that’s where I’m heading.

I’ve tried conforming in Cinema Tools, but it speeds the program up (looks like it’s the 25% speed increase mentioned in the manual). How do I get around the increased speed? I just need to add the 3:2 to remove the 24p flicker.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

If you have After Effects, load you QT in, set up a Comp and render it out adding any pulldown cadence you want in the render cue.

As a guy about to jump into HD also, this is confusing to me.

Are you saying, if I edit a show 24p in FCP and DON’T want to
lay off to tape through a KONA, but DO want to post it online or make a DVD,
I’ll need to make a QT from my sequence and run it through
After Effects? So I need to spend another
grand or more to output NOT on tape?

    Oh, wait a minute,
    just reread his post.
This is because he wants to output at 29.97, correct?
It’s not something you have to do if you want to post the show
online or make a DVD ?

    Thanks,
    Dan

So…you want to end up with a 720p30 (29.97) master for broadcast? Is that right? And the caption company wants a QT file. Well, first off, the caption company will NOT want a full resolution QT file. No…they just want a file with window code for reference as they type up the caption file. What you do is edit your entire project at 23.98, if that is what your footage is running.

But know that you are editing NDF…and need to deliver a properly timed DF master. You need to figure out what time you need to edit the NDF timeline to have it convert to a properly timed DF timeline.

What will you be outputting to? What is your final product going to be on? Typically you need to know all of this before you begin shooting…or at least before you begin editing.
