I was incorrect when I said they were the same.
DigiBeta is 2.3 to 1, 422 sampling.
DV50 is 3.3 to 1, 422 sampling.
Different yes, but “no where near”?Dan

This is just one guy of course, but I’m running 10.5.4, FCP 6.0.4, QT 7.5
and all is well for the last week or so. I was between projects so backed up
and then did all the updates.Mac Pro 3 ghtz 8 core, 8 GB mem.
8 TB Sonnet RAID.
KONA 3 5.1 drivers.
Panny 1400
Digibeta A500Dan

Is that new box being delivered?
I hadn’t heard it was on the street yet.As for downconverting an HD sequence in real time to SD centercut to DigiBeta,
I couldn’t be happier. It looks great here. But I haven’t done ANY letterbox
outputs. Is that where you see most of the issues?Dan

The easy setup I’d use is DV50-NTSC.
It should say firewire as it’s device control and input in the setting
but if not, you can change that obviously.Remember that DV50 will be twice the file size. So an hour will be 25 gigs.
Still pretty good if you ask me, but I don’t know your storage situation.Dan

So, if you look at the clip in the browser and you go down the columns of info,
does it say it’s 59.94 or 23.98 frame rate?Since it looks good on your timeline, I’m thinking it’s been captured correctly.
If you brought the clip in with the varicam setting, FCP should have only
captured the 24 frames I believe. I haven’t shot any 24PN footage, only 24P,
and when I capture using the DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 varicam easy setup
via a KONA 3 card, FCP only captures the 24 frames, not the 60 that were
put on the tape.Dan

So, no video card is why you are using firewire in?
Does the J30 have firewire out? We use the A500
which is only SDI so I don’t know about the J30.As for capturing DV, I’d use DV50 instead. It is basically the same compression
(2 to 1) as DigiBeta. DV is 5 to 1, as well as 4;1;1 sampling so chroma
will not be as good. And you CAN notice these things on a DVD.Dan

Well, in my post I did say to use the varicam setting but with the 59.94 setting.
So I’ll do what you said…. duplicate the 23.98 varicam easy setups and change to 29.97.
I need to go find some footage to test this before the actual shoots start.
Off to our friendly rental house I think.Dan

I remembered that if I shoot DVCPROHD 720/p30 (59.94) and bring it in from the 1400
via SDI through the KONA 3 with the DVCPROHD 720/p 59.94 varicam setting, then FCP
only captures 30 frames, not all 60, correct? So shooting in the field either way is fine.
And on the sequence side, I’d do what you say and make a custom 29.97
setting.Dan

Never mind. I went to the AJA site and see the info about the difference.
I’ve installed 5.1. Do you recommend the 5.1 NDD version?I’m running a Mac Pro 8 core, 3 GB, 8 GB ram system.
It has the RadeonX1900 display card.Dan

Jeremy, what’s the difference between the 5.1 and the 5.1 NDD version?
I’m using 5.1. What does NDD stand for?Dan
