  • DVCPROHD 720/30p (over 60) or 720/30pN (native) ?

Posted by Dan Riley on July 9, 2008 at 9:34 pm

I see the advantage of 30pN being smaller file size (less frames to record).
But I don’t see a sequence or capture preset for either one in FCP for KONA 3.
    Can FCP do 30pN ?

What are people doing when they want to shoot 720/30p DVCPROHD with FCP?
What codec in the camera and what codec for capture and sequence is recommended?

    Thanks,
    Dan

Dan, AJA does not provide easy setups for 720p30 footage. You have to make your own.

Start with the 23.98 easy setup and duplicate and rename them in audio/video settings (option-command-q). In the sequence and capture presets, change everywhere you see 23.98 to 29.97. If you need more help with this let me know, it’s a lot of typing and I’m fatigued from a 4AM crew call this morning…OK TMI.

I remembered that if I shoot DVCPROHD 720/p30 (59.94) and bring it in from the 1400
via SDI through the KONA 3 with the DVCPROHD 720/p 59.94 varicam setting, then FCP
only captures 30 frames, not all 60, correct? So shooting in the field either way is fine.
And on the sequence side, I’d do what you say and make a custom 29.97
    setting.

No it won’t. If you set it for 59.94, it will bring in 59.94. You have to use an easy setup with the word ‘Varicam’ after it to remove the redundant frames. So, duplicate the 23.98 Varicam settings and change the sequence and capture settings to 29.97.

Make sense? You need to make sure your settings are correct, or the footage will be captured incorrectly.

Well, in my post I did say to use the varicam setting but with the 59.94 setting.
So I’ll do what you said…. duplicate the 23.98 varicam easy setups and change to 29.97.
I need to go find some footage to test this before the actual shoots start.
Off to our friendly rental house I think.

Yeah, that’s a good idea. The biggest part ot remember is to shoot 30p in the first place. As long as that’s good, you can always tweak Kona settings.
