  • 59.94 on a 23.98 Timeline…Or Frame Rate Conversion?

Posted by Jeff Coffman on July 11, 2008 at 4:36 pm

    Hello

I shot a multi-camera shoot in 720p/24PN, with HVX-200s. One of the angles was shot in 720/24P by mistake. I’ve imported the footage into FCP 6.0.3 and inserted everything into a 23.98 timeline.

The 59.94 footage appears to be playing smoothly on the 23.98 timeline. Is that all there is to it? Will this create undesired results or problems? Is there some conversion I can make with the 59.94 to 23.98?

I tried the Frame Rate Converter plugin, but when I select it I get a warning saying it only works with 59.94 720P, which is exactly what I need to convert!

Thanks for you help in advance

    Jeff

So, if you look at the clip in the browser and you go down the columns of info,
does it say it’s 59.94 or 23.98 frame rate?

Since it looks good on your timeline, I’m thinking it’s been captured correctly.
If you brought the clip in with the varicam setting, FCP should have only
    captured the 24 frames I believe. I haven’t shot any 24PN footage, only 24P,
and when I capture using the DVCPRO HD 720p 23.98 varicam easy setup
via a KONA 3 card, FCP only captures the 24 frames, not the 60 that were
    put on the tape.

Dropping it in is fine…I do that often. But you can also use the Advanced Conversion settings in Compressor…DVCPRO HD 720p24…to get it to 23.98. I do this before I send it to Color….because color wants all the same frame rate for uber ease of workflow.

The column on the left shows 59.94 frames for the one camera angle in question. This footage was not captured since it was recorded to P2 cards with the Panasonic HVX-200. It was a straight transfer of Quicktime MOVs to the computer.

The footage does need to be rendered, but after that I can’t tell a difference. I read about updating Quicktime to 7.5 so the Frame Rate Converter will work, but it still gives me the same error. I’m not even sure though if the Frame Rate Converter will work for this purpose.

The reason it was filmed wrong was because the shooter had the FS-100 on Quicktime instead of Quicktime PN.

    Thanks. I’ll try compressor now.

I just realized I said the 59.94 was recorded on to a P2 card….It was recorded on the FS-100.

Using the Compressor Conversion setting worked great. Thanks! Is this new file the exact same as the footage originally captured at 23.98, or is there slight variation, detectable or undetectable?

    Thanks

    Jeff
