And I might add, just to be clear about it, what you want to have for stills in video apps is frame sizes LARGER than the video frame size if possible. Then you can
move in on it or around it. SO a still that’s 1500 by 1200 let’s say, will allow you to
zoom in up to 75% before losing resolution (in SD). Or it allows you to crop the shot
to just what you want to use and still fill up the frame. For HD video, even
larger stills are better for the same reason. DPI doesn’t mean a thing
in video, unless you are worrying about printing a still shot from video.Dan

I did not know AVID Media Composer worked with DVCPRO HD native from
firewire input. Is this something recently new with AVID? I had previously read
on this forum to get that to work you had to have Final Cut Pro loaded on your
system as well, so you had the Quicktime DVCPRO HD codec available.

I was buying transintl.com firewire drives for years. Then two years ago I
started buying from Macsales.com (OWC). I buy the ones that look like
the box the Mac Pro comes in. They have 400/800/USB2 connectors.
Buy 750gig versions now.All these firewire boxes are pretty much the same, except for the drives inside.
And if one doesn’t spin up, maybe it’s the drive and maybe it’s the power supply
of the box. I’d take the drive out of the box and put it in another box
before I’d call it over with.I’d say 90 percent of the drives inside my boxes are Hitachi (formally IBM).
But some of the newer ones are Seagate. Anyway, even if they don’t spin up,
there are firms that can get the data off them in an emergency.
It’s not like they crashed. The data would still be there.I’ve still got some 60 gig and 120 gig drives from 2000 and 2001 I still use
but not every day. So I wonder why I am so lucky with drives and other are not?Dan

Also, you can’t see multiclip angles if your timeline is rendered. (blue line)
If you were editing and then decided to render the sequence because of
effects or whatnot, now when you roll your sequence you will see the same
picture in both the viewer and canvas. Just get rid of the render.
You do that by clicking off the green button on the left side of the video track.
Then click it on again.Dan

I love the IDEA of the IoHD, but nobody’s got one and worked with it yet.
I don’t want delays in starting playback. I don’t want stuff that’s “supposed”
to work that doesn’t until two or three updates down then road.
I’m spoiled by my Aurora Pipe Studio. I know most of you don’t have one,
but it’s choice. It just works. Unfortunately, Aurora is no more, so no HD version.You are probably right Zak. Buy an HD SDI converter for HDV.
I see the price has come down considerably. They run around $600 now.

My personal experience with firewire drives goes back to 2000 and I’ve never had one
that didn’t spin up. That’s not to say it won’t happen to me, maybe it will. (I have never
purchased a LaCie drive either. They seem to come up regularly on this forum as trouble.)
But backing up a 350 gig project to DVDs? Not going to happen.
DLT tape, can’t take those drives home and connect to my macbook pro and
edit offline. Not a good solution either.I spin up all my 10 firewire backup project drives every few months because of
comments I’ve read on the forum about spin up problems. Maybe this will help me
not get into that situation. I don’t know. But for now, the ease of operation with
firewire backup drives, on the shelf, ready to be used when a show needs to be
re-edited, it could not be easier. Just one guy’s experience.Dan

SuperDuper is great for this.
It works every night, automatically backing up everything from my
project that’s been added or changed. I use 750 gig 800 firewire drives.
You mentioned it took you 9 hours to copy 260 gigs. You must be using
400 firewire. You’ll see nice speed gains with 800 firewire, pretty much double
the speed for transfers.I use the firewire drives not only as backup, but when 6 months from now
I want to load in my entire project back into my RAID, I don’t have to capture
everything all over again, just do a file transfer.Dan

I know it’s not shipping yet, but I see the IoHD had HDMI in/out.
Is this for HDV cameras? Maybe I could buy this instead of the KONA 3.Dan

What Jeremy said. Drag all your files or folder over. Don’t use the MM for this.
Reconnecting media is easy when you put all the moved stuff to one new place.
I do this all the time when I have a project on my RAID that’s backed up on
firewire drives per project. I can take the firewire drive home and use a copy of the
project file from the workstation at the office and copy it to my Macbook Pro C2D,
and after one click, FCP sees that all the media has been moved to the firewire drive
and off I go. Same thing in your situation.dr
