I believe their stating Dells USB 3 and express slots for a USB 3 card may not have the required bandwidth for normal operation of the Shuttle or don’t have n X58 or P55 chipset. Asus and Gigabyte make motherboards that work great with them.

Oh yea, Make sure you have the camera in manual mode and white balance it to a true white surface, like a white posterboard in the spot you will be shooting in.

If it looks like this, it is. I’m willing to bet if you capture via firewire, your scene detection will be detected. you should be able to control the tape transport controls as well from the capture app.

Vegas has never had a great keyer. You can get some pretty good results by lighting and position and the type of edges of your subject. Hard and nonreflective edges are your frined. Soft and reflective edges like shiny black clothes or edges like fluffy blonde hair are impossible to relealisticly key with this pluggin. Light the greenscreen evenly with no shadows or wrinkles, put as much space between your subject and the green screen as possible to eliminate green spill on the edges of your subject as Vegas’s keyer has no spill suppresion, and backlight your subject well. This will reduce the spill. Also if your keying DV footage, put a chroma blur filter set to medium before the chromakey filter in the pluggin chain. Spill is the biggest problem with this chromakey pluggin so if you can light things so there’s no spill, you can get a good key.

That’s very strange. Vegas shows each progressive frame as both upper and lower, interlaced. Your TV recorder isn’t recording true 720p. I would set it to 1080i capture, and let Vegas do the interlacing.

Are you sure the dv connection isn’t a four pin firewire? I’ve never seen a dv camera that used usb to capture from mini dv tape. When you capture the video from tape, are you using video capture in Vegas or are you copying from tape to the card then just transfering to your hard drive?

It says it has a firewire and USB connection. Usualy USB is to get still shots off the camera and firewire is to get video off. If you have scene detection checked in Vegas and use the firewire, it should split the video into seperate clips where you stopped and started capturing. Danny Hays -
32 bit Vegas only sees 2 gig of ram but rendering is CPU only. Start a render, then open your Windows task manager with cntl, alt and del keys, selecting task manager and click the tab that allows you to see all your CPU usage. My i7 PC used all 8 by default, but your on a Mac so I don’t know. That’s one way for you to tell if Vegas rendering is using all your CPUs.

Understand that once captured as DV or HDV on tape, it’s already compressed to that format, so getting better quality isn’t going to work like that. My shuttle also comes with the same Media Express capture software as this device does. The way to improve on the quality with these devices is to capture straight from the camera imager, live, without tape, using the Media Express software. This bypasses the camera compressor and allows you to capture as Motion JPEG or uncompressed 8 and 10 bit avi with raid 0. I can connect my HDV camera without a tape in it to the Black Magic device via component and capture as 1080i MJPEG without a raid array, set my Vegas project properties to Progressive, field order to interpolate to get rid of the interlacing and the quality is far superior to capturing it via firewire as HDV. Most newer cameras HDMI, component and composite outputs are before the camera compressor but not all are. You can test it by connecting your camera with it in “Camera mode, not vcr as to view it live without recording to tape” straight from one of these outputs to your HDTV and also connect it with firewire and open VLC and set it to “open capture device”, and monitor it via VGA or HDMI to the same HDTV and A/B them by switching the HDTVs source. You will be able to see a difference right away if your cameras outputs are before the cameras compressor. Hope this helps, Danny Hays Universal Studios FL.

Are you setting the project settings to progressive, with interpolate fields as well? This always gets rid of my interlacing, even in the Vegas preview window. That is strange. If you post an unedited clip to Vimeo, we can download it in the same format you uploaded it for a few day without a Vimeo premium account, this will allow us to test your files and see what’s happening here.
