Vegas creates horizontal lines across my videos
Posted by Kevin Byrne on January 19, 2011 at 3:46 amI record video using a Hauppauge HD PVR and whenever I drag the clips I recorded into Sony Vegas 9.0 Pro, horizontal lines are created whenever the clip moves. It is almost like a motion blur type of thing. How do I get rid of them? Attached is an example of the horizontal lines; you will be able to see them in the first few seconds of the video.

Those lines are interlacing which is required for TV which is what the Hauppauge HD PVR is designed to record. You must deinterlace your footage before using it on a PC or the web by rendering as progressive.
What render settings did you use?

January 19, 2011 at 10:05 pmWhat are your project properties? Specifically, what Deinterlace method are you using in the project properties?

January 20, 2011 at 6:53 amAre you setting the project settings to progressive, with interpolate fields as well? This always gets rid of my interlacing, even in the Vegas preview window. That is strange. If you post an unedited clip to Vimeo, we can download it in the same format you uploaded it for a few day without a Vimeo premium account, this will allow us to test your files and see what’s happening here.

January 20, 2011 at 11:50 amYea very strange. Interpolate Fields with Progressive Render throws half of the vertical resolution away so there should be no interlacing at all. Maybe it’s not an interlacing problem?

January 21, 2011 at 12:07 amI uploaded a sample clip here:
https://www.vimeo.com/19014712
with the render settings of:
Deinterlace Method: Interpolate FieldsVideo Format: AVC
Frame Size: 1280 x 720
Do not allow source to adjust frame size
Profile: Baseline
Entropy Coding: CABAC
Frame Rate: 29.970 (NTSC)
Field Order: None (progressive scan)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0000
Bit Rate: 8,000,000When the clip moves around you can see some type of motion blur. Maybe its interlacing, maybe its not. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Uploaded at 7 pm est with a 30 minute delay time.

January 21, 2011 at 5:19 amThat’s very strange. Vegas shows each progressive frame as both upper and lower, interlaced. Your TV recorder isn’t recording true 720p. I would set it to 1080i capture, and let Vegas do the interlacing.

January 21, 2011 at 1:27 pmHey thanks a lot everybody, I stopped the interlacing by switching my tv to 720p as opposed to 1080i.
