Try encoding one of your HDV files at the WMV 8mbps HD 1080-30p video preset, It’ll look fantastic. As far as DV footage, try the WMV 3 mbps preset and check file size, lower bitrate for smaller file sizes.

Hello, I’m a Vegas leader and have been using Vegas since Vegas was audio only, Vegas 3 started using video. I’ve used FCP, Avid media composer, Premier and Vegas. I can’t recall when it’s crashed on me and I use HDV all the time. I have read of problems with very large HDV projects with render problems on quad cores though. Everytime I go back to Avid or FCP I run into things I cant do that Vegas has been doing for years. If Vegas had a good chromakey plugin, I would rarely need any other program, even audio as vegas is great for that too. Most other NLE’s expect you to export audio to protools or another audio editor. I still have to use After Effects or Ultra for Chromakeying and adding shadows. I wish Keylight worked in Vegas.
All this aside, Lets see how reliable Vegas is for others.IF you’re experiencing crashes with Vegas, please post it here along with OS versions, Vegas versions, Direct X versions ECT.
A good way to find out almost every detail your on hardware and software is to click start, run, type DXDIAG and you should be able to find anything you need there. Hope this helps. -
Actually no computer can play back any HD, HDV at full frame rate without the help of other hardware. Vegas is a CPU based program where the video card will not help with the preview speed. Other NLE’s like Avid can use hardware like a Mojo or Adreniline to give you real time preview. Setting the preview to preview auto and keeping the preview window size small will help. Also selecting the important effects or transition areas and use the build dynamic ram preview option. Vegas is still better than others with this though. Try After Effects once and you’ll be happier with Vegas. On a good note, your quad core will make a drastic improvement with render speeds. Hope this helps. Danny Hays

You can shoot the presenter in front of a green screen with some extra green screen cloth in front of the presenter from the chin down and chromakey everything out but the head. You may need to use another chromakey in the effects chain if the two greens don’t match well enough for one to key both out. Then export with a transparent alpha channel. I think Vegas does that. Hope this helps.

HMM, Soloing an audio track will do the same thing. Try cycling the solo and mute buttons. Is it this way only on this project? If worst comes to worst you can open another instance of Vegas and copy all the audio and video events by lassoing them and pasting into a new project. It looks like the audio tracks soloed even though the button is not in. Let us know what you find. Danny Hays

Thanks RoRK, Due to Vegas’s weak chromakey plugin and ultra not being a plugin I could use in a timeline, my workflow for that video was not something I would recommend. For example I had to make a 32 bit uncompressed with alpha avi for every instance of me in the video and Vegas didn’t handle the edges as well as I hoped. Then I discovered Keylight in AF where I can do it all in one comp. I need that freedom to make a music video with 4 of me where timing and placement are crucial, and with anchored shadows and some practice, I think I can make it look very real. I just posted a new thread asking for other peoples chromakey videos so I can see what can be done with AF and keylight. Once I get it down and finish the video, I would love to make a tutorial if people want it. I’d be gald to answer any questions on the subject if that will help anyone. Thanks again. Danny Hays

OK, that will get me started in the right direction. As I said I’m still new with AF. I just did a google search on perspective radial shadows and found a “Smart drop shadow preset” which I downloaded too. My final goal is to make a music video where I play all the instruments that looks very real. I recently won a National CMT green screen contest but my feet were not in it and shadows were not realy needed. I used Ultra and Sony Vegas to do it. If your interested, here’s the youtube link.

I guess I should have stated it that way. When I key someone from heat to toe, I can make it look very real except for floor shadows. Adobe Ultra has a parameter for 5 diferent shadows which are ok,,, better than none. I’m still new to After Effects and would like to add shadows with it. Any tutorials on this that you know of? I posted this several days agao and your the first to respond so thanks. Danny Hays
