    Good day gentlemen.

My question is about the quality of my end product. I record in both DV and HDV but mainly DV. I typically record on a Canon HV20. I have Vegas Pro 8.0. I render all of my video work in wmv format. Typically at 720×480 at 1.5Mbps. This generally generates decent video and the final video is typically a size of around 10MB per minute.

My question is how do I get a better quality video. The video is decent but I want it to be the absolute best it can possibly be. Only caveeat being that I can’t have some ridiculous file size. I would like to have the best quality video I can get while never exceeding 20MB per minute in my final product.

I’ve heard there are some compression software packages which would allow me to encode the video at 10Mbps in Vegas and then use a compression SW to reduce the file size of the video.

    I use a PC. Please don’t suggest that I go buy a mac 🙂

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your help.

You might want to try using the Sony AVC or MainConcept AVC/AAC templates. They are MPEG4 and should give you very good quality at low bitrates.

But I need my final encoded video to be in WMV format. So, that wouldn’t work, I don’t believe.

Oh, that wasn’t clear from your post. Well… WMV is what it is. If you’re willing to go to 20MB/sec then increase the data rate on your WMV renders. If you’re getting 10MB at 1.5Mbps double it to 3.0Mbps. Like I said, WMV is what it is. If you want to use a better codec you need to be willing to render to a different format.

Try encoding one of your HDV files at the WMV 8mbps HD 1080-30p video preset, It’ll look fantastic. As far as DV footage, try the WMV 3 mbps preset and check file size, lower bitrate for smaller file sizes.
    Hope this helps. Danny Hays

You are right. It does look great. Unfortunately, it comes out to about 60MB/minute which is about three times larger than I can use. I do appreciate your assistance though. If anyone else has any ideas, let me know.

    Thanks.
