If they’re Hi def, you should edit them like that, then render as your desired format. Did you convert the files to 640 x 480 with Vegas? Do the HD files work in Vegas?

I believe Vegas is a main CPU only when it comes to your video preview.
File format does make a difference though. What kind of file and what’s the speed of your computer? -

Here’s a Vegas basics tutorial I just made showing you some of the things your asking about. I see by your setings that your not in the USA otherwise you could call me for more details. If you have a webcam, you can download Skype and we could video converence for free and I could show you what you want to know. Hope this helps, at least a little. I also recommend reading the help file when you get the time. It’s long but very informative. Danny

Have you tried to edit the HDV on your computer yet? Vegas handles it very well these days, even on Vegas 8. But yes you can downconvert, edit, then replace the footage with the HDV file. You can change the frame rate in your project settings. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

Your video is probably 16 x 9 and your screen is probably a wide screen. His is probably a 3 x 4 screen. This will cause the video to be letterboxed on his.

The picture shows the knife moving fast. Your project settings are set to lower fields and not progressive. that means you’r seeing the lower fields and by the time it scans the upper fields the knife has moved. Setting it to progressive and blend will fix it some but make it blurry. Interpolate will be clearer but may be a little choppy.

Vegas is so much easier than Avid to me. Just click on a video event on the timeline to select it. Put your curser at either edge and drag to shorten, or or put your curser where you wand to split an hit the s key. Just click on an event on the timeline and you can drag it left and right for timing, and up and down to different tracks. The Vegas help file is very good and you can use the search button, (Binoculars) to find answers to specific questions.
Don’t give up on Vegas just yet. If you learned Avid, you can easily learn Vegas.
