What are your export settings? Have you tried a different media player?

Whichever is the main camera if possible. It likely won’t make a difference, as the most important settings are frame size and frame rate and if they are both the same, you’re in good shape. I like to just drag a clip onto the “New Sequence” button and it automatically creates a sequence with the best settings.

Here’s a nice tutorial on getting started. Or if you have a few dollars to spend, Twitch is a great plugin for this sort of thing. There are also some more advanced scripts and plugins you can look in to.

It’s probably because you are at the very start of your timeline and no particles have been generated yet.

You could also try adding some noise or grain to the video.

DSLR is not a format; the camera is most likely recording H.264. You should have no problem with H.264 and AVCHD files on a timeline.

Uninstalling Premiere will not delete your project files, but you can install the newer version of Adobe software without removing the old version. I would do this until you verify the new one works on your machine.

People read books, take classes, and spend years in the field to find all the answers you are looking for. You could learn more about your initial question by looking up how to do compositing, rotoscoping, and set extensions. Just be aware there is no easy button to achieve any of this. Start with the basics and slowly grow your skills.

Great points. The fact that you can install several versions back if you need to really makes this a non-issue. At least when I installed it last night, I thought it made clear it was over-writing the previous version and gave an option not to do so.

A lot of it depends on your preference and the specific graphic needs you may have. I tend to like editing the footage together in Premiere and then send it over to After Effects via Dynamic Link. That way you can still tweak the editing while adding in effects.
