that´s no more a point with DVD SP.
I´ve never seen a single menu, that will flood the 1GB-limit, and if you´ll have more menus, so the amount will hit the 1GB-limt DVDSP will swap these menus into the next VTSM.

according to max. duration on DVD-5, I would never put more than 110-120min of video on DVD-5, and they should have a 2-pass VBR-encoding.

this calculation includes that you´ll use 1 dolby digital audio-stream@192kbit/s.

so you´ll have an average-bitrate at about 4.8-5.2MBit/s.

hey dave,
you need to set your dialouge-normalisation to -31dBFs, as -27dBFs is the typical normalisation for films from cinema. you also need to set the compression to none in the preprocessing-tab.

then your AC-3-audio will have the same level as your input-file.

yes – by spec it´s possible to mix all frame-rates with Blu-ray but there are strong limitations within encore.

another problem: 25/50i-material wont be played anywhere outside PAL-countries in most cases, as BD-spec has a limitation for 25/50i for PAL-countries only, so you need to go 24p or i60.

and finally: encore couldn´t handle HD and SD-clips on the same disk, the material will be transcoded depending on the project-settings.

if you need to create a DVD, you need to ask the client if he needs PAL or NTSC, both can´t be done on one disk by spec, and of course you need to transfer the other material.

if your clients recommendation is PAL you need to format-convert the NTSC-files and wise versa.

subrib has an OCR-software within and you need to tell him the correct character. very simple…

so – with a bit of work you´ll get correct ripped subtitles.

with toast you can burn HiDef on DVD, correct. it will create a AVCHD-disc that could be played in several BD-players but it´ll be no Blu-ray disk then.

AVCHD-discs coulnd´t have a menu, so if you would like to have a menu on your disc you need to think about burning a real BD.

if DVD architect could import STL-files you might try google-search for “subrip”(freeware).

it´s a PC-app that could create subtitle-files from existing VOB-files.

if you are on a mac, you could use cinematize pro.

you´ll have the position$, TCs, and the imagename.

you need to right-click on the subtitle-track where you would like to import the subtitle and select “import subtitle-file”.

so your subtitles will be imported to your project.

you can create a disc-image using DVDSP and burn it using apple disk utility, so you don´t need to get toast.

the disadvantage is, you can only burn 1 disk each time. if you would like to burn multiple DVDs at the same time, you need to install 2 instances (copys) of toast on your computer, so each of them could be started and burn a disk to individual burners.

hey martin,
I never had any issue while importing assets created with compressor into encore CS4 or CS5.

if you have choosen the right project-settings your assets wont be transcoded.

it´ll take a LOT time to import, depending on the duration of your film. encore will create meta-datas while importing the h264-assets onto your system-drive.

please have a look at your preferences>media you should clean the media cache if you have trouble with the meta-datas.

if you have a PC or bootcamp by side you can also choose to have a look at EasyBD from DVD Logic. you can create spec-level BDs and if you need to have some nice menus you could do this with IGEditor.
