bryce,to answer this, you might give us a bit more informations what should happen with your documentary.

– which cam do you use for your shoots
– will it go to cinema
– will there be a BD
– what is your budget
– on what kind of system will it be edited
– will it be a PAL or NTSC-DVD

in general you could say: higher quality input will bring better quality in your output.

so you might go uncompressed 8bit or maybe apple pro res HQ or 444 depending on your workflow.

maybe you´ll have a offline/online HD-2K or 4K-edit with a big color-correction, so you might give us a bit more informations.

SD-TV is really bad if you are starting at HD. if you are working 29.98 you need to downscale to NTSC-DVD, and this is twice as worth.

NTSC has a really bad resolution: 720×480

if you would like to create a 720p-blu-ray on DVD, that would be possible but wont be playable on DVD-players.

BD-content on DVD is called AVCHD-disc and will be played on every BD-player, but no menus will be visible.

but you need to burn the BD using UDF2.5-format.

there is no other way then encode menus within encore! this is a stupid thing!

even if you take previously encoded assets encore will transcode them again to MPEG2HD – and this as well when your project-transcoding-settings are set to H264.

if you have time for a walk, and would like to get in BD-spec-authoring you should have a look at EasyBD + IGEditor.

If you´ll learn how to use it, this is a great application-combination.

the normal workflow would be to encode the audio/video-assets prior authoring.

encore and DVD Studio could also do it for you, but you´ll have better control if you do this first.

but now season is finshed so I could come back to your sceen and your menus.

I just need to know – is it a PAL or NTSC-DVD?

note: you haven´t took care about title and action-save!! some of your button wont be seen on TV-screens.

DVD means SD by spec, means 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL). if you would like to have 720p you need to go blu-ray-disk. that´s the only HD-way to go.

PS: for DVD-R/+R I would mention not to work with higher bitrates than 7.8MBit/s for you video, and allways use dolby digital audio.
