September 19, 2008 at 11:09 pm in reply to: Silverlight to support H.264?

Sorry I just had to step in here Ed 😉

Actually it’ll be supported in Silverlight 2

Here’s the Microsoft press release from IBC:
    https://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2008/sep08/09-09silverlight.mspx

    Ben’s blog:
    https://on10.net/blogs/benwagg/H264-and-AAC-support-coming-in-Silverlight/

    My take:
VC-1 & Silverlight have failed to set the world on fire in the way Microsoft hoped they would. HD-DVD died and although VC-1 is used to encode a certain percentage of Blu-ray titles in the States, it’s just not the same case in Europe and the ROTW.
VC-1 lags behind .264 quality and despite easier decode requirements it’s just not making the inroads hoped.

Despite everything blogged about Silverlight NOT being a competitor to Flash, why else would it be around, apart from being easier to code and deploy?
Microsoft feel they are hurting badly from the mass penetration of Flash and as such FLV and .264, despite them being harder to code, messier to work with and harder (and more expensive) to deploy.

So IMO, in order to try to get more share of the market, Microsoft have swallowed their pride a little in making .264 a part of SIlverlight 2+.
As Ben says in his blog “We have customers with libraries of H.264 content they wanted to publish to Silverlight, but didn’t want to reencode to VC-1′.
Funny that they didn’t choose VC-1 in the first place, also funny that they’d go with Silverlight over Flash considering that all their clients would have to install yet another player..What is it that Flash won’t do that they’d need Silverlight for?

Yea, it doesn’t add up, does it.

Obviously, I totally acknowledge that Microsoft played a big part in the development of H.264 which makes it even more strange to me that they would then go to all the effort of producing a competitive format, that doesn’t have the performance, or potential of .264, and is, as we are now seeing, doing everything it can just to keep it’s head above water. Microsoft are throwing very large amounts of marketing cash at it just to do this..

Same old story, “we know we’re not as good as you, but if we throw enough cash around we’ll probably win.

It’s just Microsoft over again, they just can’t stand anybody doing anything without them trying to compete then dominate and hopefully finally crush (or buy and swallow up):

    E.G.

    Quicktime – MS video/Windows Media
    MPEG-4 – MS MPEG-4 V1/2/3
    Netscape – Internet Explorer
    OpenGL – DirectX
    OSX – Vista
    Blu-ray – HD-DVD
    iPod – Zune
    ‘touch’ – big ass table
    Flash – Silverlight
    H.264 – VC-1
    I’m a Mac ad – I’m a PC ad
    Google – Whatever.

Of course competition is healthy but…

They should go back to the drawing board and back to their roots, buy a decent OS, skin it and get it out of the door, then work on copying the other stuff, better. (Tongue only slightly in cheek)

Lastly, what are the chances of being able to author once and deliver to the three platforms? Quicktime and Flash maybe, but Silverlight as well, I might have to find a hat to eat….!!!

Although your USB2 drive may have a maximum transfer rate of 480Mbit/s, its sustained transfer rate will be much, much lower, maybe only something like 120Mbit/s

See if your system is capable of using the Huffyyuv CODEC as part of FFDShow.

It might also be worth looking at other screen capture solutions like:

    CamStudio – https://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/
    or
    https://www.screenvirtuoso.com/help/source/html/fmcodec.html

    1. CODEC to use:

You’ll need a very fast system to capture uncompressed, fast in terms of processing power, but more importantly the speed of your storage.

None of the CODECs listed are either very modern or any good but of those I’d try Xvid and MS MPEG-4 V3. You’ll need to experiment with datarates. You state 1500Kbits/sec would be a good starting point for standard def or below frame sizes depending on what kind of game you are trying to capture – i.e. it would be more than good enough for a card game but probably useless for a highly detailed racing game or fast moving 3rd person shooter.

As for resolution and aspect ratio; the resolution of the capture will depend on the above: i.e. the power of your system and the quality you require from the CODEC you choose. I’d say you’d be lucky to get higher than 640×480 capture at more than 30fps at decent quality, but I’d liked to be proved wrong.

Best to do your edit in Premiere, export to AVI and use a high quality encoding package to convert to FLV. 2nd best is export straight to FLV

Out of the box compressor can’t do Flash.

If you want the best then Episode is the package to get.

If you want to do it for free then go here:

    Indeed, my mistake.

Procoder is still far and away the best out there for the money.

One of my players has a physical switch at the back, but I really don’t think this is the issue here.

Did you do an uninstall before the install/update? – That usually does the trick, and you’ve obviously restarted since doing the update?

September 19, 2008 at 10:23 am in reply to: Compressor – “Quicktime – Error 0” Message

It usually relates to some piece of media in the time-line that is either corrupt or that QuickTime doesn’t understand.

Have you got any still or media you’ve imported from elsewhere?

Have you applied any effects that have not rendered correctly?
