Not the best route but save time at the expense of quality. DVDSP uses plain old Quicktime for MPEG-2 compression so you don’t get access to all the cool stuff in compressor if you go that route.

Anything QT can be taken into DVDSP. Quicktime is at the heart of the operating system so any application or toolset can access any Quicktime codec (in theory).

“Like for like settings will produce the same results. The difference will come down to the pre-processing filtering, scaling, deinterlacing frame rate conversion and so on. Compresssor has some very good filtering, better than Adobe and probably better than MC.

They use very high quality source material.
They use the very best MPEG-2 transcoders
They use 2 pass VBR
and int he case of a 3 hour movie, they use a dual layer DVD. – DVD9

Sound like you are trying to fit too much onto the DVD and the quality of your source is such that when heavily compressed it looks crap.
You can save quite a bit of space by using AC3 for the audio.
The other solution is to either split over 2 DVDs or use a dual layer DVD (DVD-9) and burner.

Handbrake is a free MPEG-4/x264 transcoder. That’s all.

Only via the Avid Quicktime Codecs, if they are installed.
Bottom line here is that unless you get the settings exactly right in the external transcoder, then the Avid will want to render everything again, so your best bet is to drop them into the Avid and let it do a resize and codec transcode at the same time.

Indeed, the Verizon 3G network (Actually CDMA/EVDO) with the MiFi bridge is indeed fast (600Kb/s – 1.4Mb/s), fast enough to stream SD sized content, so I stand corrected on that.
The thing to consider is that in order to get that kind of speed you are going to need to be on the Verizon network and probably in procession of a MiFi as well?
I’m from the UK so I don’t know for sure but I heard that Verizon is not offering a service for iPad…

Both compressor and MPEGSC use the Quicktime H.264 libraries, which are widely regarded as bottom of the pile when it comes to quality.
I’d recommend you take a look at Episode which uses Dicas H.264

MPEGStreamclip is a great video utility program but if you want to transcode high quality video then you need to invest some cash in a dedicated transcoding application.
