Flash is a video format. YouTube take you beautiful looking movie and re-encode to the Flash format. Flash does not need a special player like Quicktime, Windows Media Player or Real.
Obviously recompressing something will reduce it’s quality.

Ha! – I won my bet (a private bet). I guessed a while back you’d end up there.

Best of luck at Microsoft. While you’re there I’m keeping my fingers crossed that you’ll do much to further the support for Windows Media (and VC-1?) on the Mac….?

I think VC-1 has some meaningful technical advantages over H.264 in this area.
