Rule of thumb – If you’re going to a web/computer device delivery codec then the simpliest way is to simply increase contrast to get blacks black and whites white and then to stop the whites becoming blown-out, drop the brightness slightly. You’re basically expanding from video (601) 16-235 to RGB 0-255.
Of you’re going to a broadcast codec/standard you shouldn’t need to do anything unless you are targeting only computer display device types.

Just drag the compressor icon to the trash, that un-installs it. – Re-install from the CD/DVD choosing to customize the install

Uncompressed SDI is 270Mbit/s – well beyond the (real world) capabilities of a single 7200 rpm Firewire drive.

    Chris,

    This is what I wrote:

“…de-select the ‘make self contained’ box’….”

    de-select means don’t select it or un-select it….

I think you have to have the Pro version of Quicktime for this but you’ll find that there’s a check box for ‘High quality’ in the movie’s properties (Apple key + J) under video track.
That should give you the quality you’re looking for.

Best guide with text is to avoid detailed, complex fonts with serifs. If unavoidable try applying a 1 or 2 pixel blur (some people like to blur vertical only) to stop field flickering.

DVDSP does not support HDV (, you’ll need to re-size to PAL/NTSC at some point before DVDSP.
I’ve never done it with HDV, but I believe your best route would be exporting from FCPHD to Compressor for re-sizing and encoding to MPEG-2. If you want to use another encoder then export as a Quicktime movie and in the options dialog, de-select the ‘make self contained’ box. This will give you a QT ref movie.

  • “…But here’s the rub – the Meridian codec and the 8-bit Uncompressed sequences have a “gamma shift” problem but the MJPEGA sequence does not”

I read that as ‘there was no shift happening with MJPEG’

I’d rather a slight gamma change (if there is in fact any change) than go from YUV->RGB->YUV.

I’d expect some (possibly perceived) visual changes in the display of interlaced video on a progressive display when switching between motion and paused viewing.

    Proof of the pudding………

As far as I know it’ll work within your existing encoding application; compressor, cleaner or as an export from FCP, just like any other Quicktime export. The advantage of using cleaner is the pre-proccessing.

  • Personally I’d avoid the Animation codec and use Motion JPEG @ 100% quality. The Animation CODEC is 8bit RGB, and makes massive files. Motion JPEG is YUV 4:2:2.
