Agreed. He is tip toeing very lightly, making sure he expresses his dislike in a way that wouldn’t harm him from staying in the apple inner circle.
Personally the main message I get from this interview is that he openly questions Apple and their relationship to professionals: “Do they still want us?”
He’s using the interview to call out to Apple and get them talking again.

I fit directly into this category. I work at an “all avid, all PC” facility. I bring my macbook pro to work every day. Why? Because I have customized my laptop to death, to the extent that I cannot replicate it on a stock machine. Little things like having dragon dictate installed, meaning that I never ‘type’ log notes in, I just say them into the computer — makes me able to work longer without breaks. And my wrist thanks me.
My bosses are aware of my improved efficiency but don’t know the details, other than the fact that I churn through footage faster than my coworkers. They obviously praise the effort, but sometimes it creates an interesting situation that might be worth exploring on its own one day: Last week I was asked to withhold some of my logging data because it would “create an unfair advantage to my team.” I guess that’s an office politics matter, but bottom line: these small customizations, when added up, give me a noticeable advantage against the worker who relies on the locked-down work machine, which has zero extras besides a retail copy of Avid.
So in conclusion — I think that ANY worker who brings in their laptop is going to be more efficient. The majority of people who do such a thing just also happen to buy macs.

So basically you’re saying that you’re using FCPX because you ‘like it better’ and do not care about whatever the ‘standard’ is?
You know what – I hear a lot of laughable arguments on here as to why people should be using FCPX … but your writeup is simple, honest, and to the point. Kudos.

It’s too bad you don’t know FCP7, becase it’s going to keep you employed for the next 2-5 years depending on what the studios are doing in your area.
You’d be even better served learning Avid. If TV is your target job, then Avid is the no-brainer answer here.

Go to the 7% mark on your timeline. There’s a good chance that you’ve got a file corruption issue.
First, see if you can repeat the error with marking an in/out point on the timeline. If so – narrow the in/out down each time until you know precisely where the timeline crashes. Then remove that file from the timeline and see if you can export.
If this turns out to be the culprit, you may still be able to use the corrupt file, just with a slightly different in or out point.
I had such an instance on a reality TV show a few years back… while working as an assistant editor I had to shave 2 frames off the end of a clip, and that solved it.

The idea is that you’ll get some of the ad revenue. It’s hardly a new idea and for the foreseeable future probably won’t yield any worth while returns for higher production value work.
But hey…video on the internet is a tough one to crack…but at least Google is realizing that they need to spur some higher production value to compete with TV.
It’s going to be a long, long process, and TV is never going to die out, either. I think longer format will make its bread-and-butter on TV but perhaps release longer episodes (or extra material?) regular to the internet… or some kind of combo like that…

Yeah… I was gonna say… maybe that date just bodes well because it coincides with some kind of fiscal calendar mark… so that when all these companies lay people off the announcement hopefully overshadows the news :p (I’m joking, but just seems so funny they all pick the same day)
Makes me glad I am keeping up to date with Premiere Pro … Avid lays off 200 people while Adobe buys IRIDAS and the Automatic Duck crew … shows you who is having good fortune as a company these days (or…maybe which area the company decided to allocate funds for I guess).

Ran/running Media Composer 5.5 on my 2008 Macbook Pro, and my Early 2011 macbook pro i7. Runs very well on both.

Also might want to note that MC 5.5.3 is meant for OSX 10.6.8. I’m not expert in these matters, but I know that a lot of OpenGL code changed in that release which caused issues for both Avid and Adobe… so MC 5.5.3 was specifically designed to address these issues on 10.6.8 …just sayin.
