I don’t think the 2/3 Inch XDCAM HD will be cheaper than the HVX-900 initially nor will it have to be. My conversations with Sony indicate the 2/3 inch model will be a replacement for Digibeta. If they come up with a higher data rate than the current best XD HD 35 then they will really be close to replacing HDCAM which Sony seems inclined to keep around. The advantage of XDCAM HD vs HVX-900 is random access which is arguably a bigger selling point than picture quality for a large part of the market. Considering that some people even argue that the current best XDCAM HD is as good or better than Varicam there is reason to believe the 2/3 inch XDCAM model can be priced above the HVX-900 price. Panasonic also didn’t make the HVX-900 standard def capable which the current XDCAM HD can be and dangerosly I assume the 2/3 inch will be also. I still think Panasonic should have put a couple of P2 slots on the HVX-900 and let us record a standard def DV50 signal ala the less expensive HVX-200.
If I were marketing for Sony I would lose the low end XDCAM HD model when the 2/3 inch comes out, Lower the price of the current High end Model to around 20k and price the XDCAM HD 2/3 inch at close to 30K if they can. If there is a higher quality model they can go up to 35K. It will be interesting to see what the cost differential of a 2/3 inch chip is compared to 1/2 inch chip in HD. In SD the difference was arund 5K. The double sided XDCAM capability due with the 2/3 inch is also worth something the question is what will Sony want it to be.Daniel Epstein

Evan,
I know Apple has promised 24F support in Final Cut but it has not been delivered yet. (Last rumor was August but you know I would guess whenever the next Canon show is. Last year it was early Sept I think) I know this workflow has been discussed on Other sites so you may want to check them out. It was not straightforward but this site doesn’t have much info about this directlyDaniel Epstein

Check your bars when you look at playback coming out of the DSR-11. If you have been monitoring in analog with set-up at 7.5 your DV tapes from firewire will look dark as they are recorded at 0 set up through the firewire. When you set up your monitor to 0 set up your 7.5 stuff will look greyish. This is a common issue. Technically the quality of the firewire should be better but your monitoring makes it look worse since the DRS-11 doesn’t ass set up and the Media 100 can. The set up is only on the analog out not the firewire.

If the clips are recorded from the camera in a format you are using in your project or timeline they should be imported without out rendering. If they are different then your project settings then they will need to be rendered. The Firestore has settings for different systems so it is not just the device which determines the recording it is also the settings at the time of the recording

It depends on the Frame rate you recorded the HDV in the Canon and the capture method. 5.04 can capture 60i and 30F but not 24F through firewire. If you are using a Kona Card you might be able to come in through the SDI and convert the footage to some other CODEC.

If you have a nice clean piece of 85 gel you can color correct the monitor towards Tungsten. Just cut it to size and place it on the screen. It is very hard to just do it with the electronics of most monitors. Even if you balance the color so it is a lower color balance you are still dealing with a very high color temp source. You can also help by using daylight source lights like Kineflos, HMI’s. You can also use half or full blue on Tungsten lights. Some combination of these techniques should work out well. Remember they have a lot of rehearsal time to figure out what they want to do.

Ruby,
A couple of things to watch out for. 24P is better if you are staying in the video realm. 24PA is if you are really going to edit at 24 and go out to film. The difference is in the way the frames are stored in the 60i stream. It is easier for the computer to pull out the advanced frames but the initial result has more stutter in the motion when looked at in 60i
If you are going the DVX-100b route and still want to use your Sony Clamshell for playback you better do a test. I have found Panasonic DVX-100A doesn’t play back sound on my GVD-900 clamshell. There seems to be a difference in the way Panasonic does DV compared to Sony and Canon. My DSR-45 plays back both kinds of tape but not my clamshell.
As for the cameras the DVX-100B is more fun to shoot with than the XL2 or XLH1. Downsides are not being able to swap lenses, No true 16×9 (letterbox is 4×3 and squeeze is electronic)Daniel Epstein

Thanks Steve,
So any 1200, 1700 or the New 1400 can play the tapes from the HDX 900. as well as any VaricamDaniel Epstein

Steve,
Since you bring up the HDX-900 and its record function. Can you tell is which decks the tape is compatible with?Daniel Epstein

Hey Jan,
Just a little curious why the HDX 900 doesn’t have a couple of P2 slots on it as well. It also would have been dynamite if it could actually work as an NTSC camera in DVCPRO50. I also understand there is another camera coming out early next year which sounds similar but is only P2. I am not sure the model name. Somehow there doesn’t seem to be a big brother to the HVX-200 in the Panasonic Line which has similar capabilities to the smaller camera but has the 2/3 inch sensors on it. Also in someones earlier post they said the cassette size was different from the Varicam while in my experience it seemed to be the same length.Daniel Epstein
