Greg,
This is one of the mysteries of the Panasonic since the DVX-100. My guess is it hasn’t changed in the HVX-200. I think Sony is the only manufacturer of the small cameras which lets you use Auto control on individual channels.
For instance the Canon XLH1 is either auto or manual on both channels 1 + 2
I am not sure about the JVC.
On the DVX series the ALC was pretty good. It isn’t AGC it is just a limiter and the cameraman has to ride the levels. Not as brainless as AGC for some situations.
I hope I am wrong.Daniel Epstein

Can’t help you with changing the Kelvin Preset but I would be very careful changing the RGB gain. The feature of changing the preset color temperature is not on every Sony camera although it is a dandy one. I haven’t seen anything like it on the F900.

There is a downcovert from HDV to Dv on the Firewire port. Page 113 of the PDF manual. As for accuracy on redigitize I would be skeptical since I have found the HDV timecode to act flaky capturing clips into Final Cut 5.

I don’t think the buyers of this camera are all broadcast users but it does have features which can be used in multiple camera situations and with the right accessories studio and field. Timecode and genlock and SDI are all great features for multi cam production. Does this make it broadcast?
The biggest issues I have with the camera is the lens, viewfinder and playback options are not as mature as the camera body. The standard lens is still the only good HDV option, a wide angle adapter may or may not be good enough. There is currently no hi res viewfinder only the standard def one for the XL2. The wide angle lenses and manual lenses are rumored to arrive 3rd or 4th QTR this year. Some people have been using the XL2 accessories successfully but you may not find them acceptable. If you shoot in HDV and want to play back 30f and 24F you need an XLH1 as the playback device.
As time goes on these issues should fall by the wayside but you are going to be disappointed if your method of production requires any of the accessories which haven’t been delivered yet. As for waiting for NAb this is always a good thing unless you need to shoot something before that. Also most of the products which are announced at NAB are not delivered until much later.
Of course it is hard to imagine a camera which is as flexible as this one for different kinds of productions. Pal and NTSC, removable lens, Time Code and Genlock, HDV,DV 60i,decent 30F, decent 24F and more. I use all of these options at one time or another.Daniel Epstein

So far the only zoom lens which is hi def capable is the one which came with the camera. If you want to use the manual lens made for an XL-2 or older Canon camera then you might see image defects from the lens. Soft corners and more color abberation are typical. This still might be your best option for shooting a particular shot.
Yes it does seem a little silly to have a removable lens when there is only one version of it delivered but they don’t have the other products ready to ship. As for other manufacturers they need to see the device before they can test and make accessories for it. Apparently 1080 is not as easy to design for as 720.
Canon doesn’t seem to have lined up other manufacturers before the release of the camera nor have they delivered a wide arrangement of accessories themselves first.
Once these issues are dealt with the flexibility of being able to remove the lens and put different optics on it will be a big plus.Daniel Epstein

The lens will fit on the camera but optically it might not be good enough if you are recording in HDV. Those lenses where only designed for NTSC or Pal and don’t quite have the spec to work in 1080. Of course you can try it and see if you can live with it. I tried a Century Wide Angle adapter on the XL-H1 and it had all the issues the companies said it would but I still might use it to get the shot I needed. There isn’t anything else available for the camera at the moment

Greg,
To sync the timecode from one camera to the other you have to set the timecode out in the menu. Use a BNC from Camera 1 TC out to Camera 2 TC IN
Both have to have timecode on free run and set to the same Drop Non drop setting. If you disconnect after syncing they will probably drift over time.
If you want better accuracy you should genlock the cameras with cables. You can run the video of one camera to the genlock in of the other but be careful you don’t disconnect the cable while recording becasue you could get a glitch on recording when you disconnect. A sync generator is preferable for this.Daniel Epstein
