Received New HVX200 – Observations for JLC
I got mine a couple of days ago but have been busy shooting and editing a couple of projects with my old cam and had scant time to work with the new cam.
Overall I like the camera a lot. I was able to download some files to my G5 Final Cut without even reading the manual. They looked good. I can see this camera will improve my commercial output for sure.A couple of dislikes:
The apparent size of the monitor in the eyepiece is disappointingly small. I have been using a Sony DSR250 for some years now and it has a much larger viewing angle/area. The 200 eyepiece monitor seems like it is “farther away”, swimming in the vast darkness of outerspace…
One other thing. I tried shooting a few different formats for fun and then find I cannot view them back in the LCD monitor unless the playback is set the same as the recording was – or something like that. So far I haven’t found a quick method for changing this but regardless, I really think this should be done “on the fly” by the camera itself.
Also, I really wish the focus ring was “direct” instead of floating. At least the zoom is – and that is a real PLUS.
The manual really suffers from a lack of an alphabetical index in the back. That is one of the best ways to find things fast. Also, it tends to use letter abreviations instead of whole words TOO MUCH. After a while I’m sure I’ll recognize them but at first it is very trying… A standard convention is to first use a term (maybe in boldface) and then append the initials or shortform. Like: …when you are inserting a Digital Video (DV) tape…
A short glossary would be useful in this regard.
